The greatest chess player of all time and Russian political hero Garry Kasparov...
He seems on the surface to be getting outplayed in the poltical game by Putin and company.
What subtle little moves is he making? How weak is his position, really?
Originally posted by AThousandYoungHe was mentally stable enough to win a world championship and then disapppear into obscurity and then come back and win another. As for him being a jerk, that has nothing to do with winning at chess. I think what is going on here is that people simply like Kasprov better than Fischer as a person. There is NO reason to believe that kasprov would dominate Fischer..
Fischer was a genius but too mentally unstable to channel it to it's true potential.
He was also a jerk.
Originally posted by whodeyLikewise, there is no reason to believe Fischer would dominate Kasparov. The only thing that could ever settle this debate would be a match between Fischer and Kasparov, which never happened and never can happen. Everything else is pure speculation. 😛

Originally posted by robbie carrobieWhat are you talking about? Fischer demanded incredible amounts of money to play.
The main difference of course is that Fischer could not be bought and sold, unlike Kasparov, who endorsed products ranging from chess computers to tomato sauce. This is why Fischer loathed him!
Originally posted by AThousandYoungyes to play chess, not to endorse olive oil and lamp shades. Nor would he stoop to making sure that everyone he played at a chess club sponsored simultaneous event was rated 1900 and below, capiche?

Originally posted by robbie carrobieI have no problem with celebrities endorsing products if they believe the product is a good one, and they use it themselves. But it's hard to judge whether this is the case unless you know the celebrity personally.

In fact, a high-profile celebrity can have a great deal of control over the products they endorse -- suppose Kasparov discovers that the tomato sauce company is employing slave labor - he might suddenly announce he's unhappy with the product and explain why -- and now that his face is on every bottle, the public is especially likely to listen to what he has to say.
Originally posted by MelanerpesActually in the documentary that i had seen, Kasparov actually did visit the 'designer', of the products that were to feature his name. for the life of me i cannot remember what they were, although i think it was a food product. Why buying ketchup with Kasparovs name on it, or any other product for that matter with a celebrities name attached to it, is in any way better than buying a similar product, i do not know! in fact it appears to me to be deceptive, for what of those celebrities who endorse a product, but would never in their wildest dreams use it! Thus Fischer, in his search for truth could not stomach such a proposition, Kasparov in my measly opinion was much less scrupulous about what he was willing to endorse.
