Katie warms my heart. When she does an interview, she often gets the interviewee to forget they are speaking to the nation and they think they're speaking to her alone. That's when they reveal themselves.

Last night's CBS Evening News aired part of an interview with Sarah Palin, who demonstrated beyond any doubts her grasp of economic policy and John McCain's record after 26 years: it slipped away before she knew it had tickled her palm.

Next to Palin, Dan Quayle looks like a poster boy for Mensa.

Far worse than his correction of a word spelled correctly was his utter ignorance of Supreme Court decisions that every pre-law student should know. But, at least his statements regarding the Pledge of Allegiance and the flag demonstrated that he know more than the word "maverick". He could tell you what the word maverick means.

Couric: But he's been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more.

Palin: He's also known as the maverick though, taking shots from his own party, and certainly taking shots from the other party. Trying to get people to understand what he's been talking about - the need to reform government.

If it wasn't so serious I would be laughing. Worse than watching Bambi get caught in the oncoming headlights, this was truly embarrassing. I know pollies depend on well worn sound bytes to answer questions but when they try and back peddle out of the minefield of their own ignorance then the display is truly staggering.

Couric: You've said, quote, "John McCain will reform the way Wall Street does business." Other than supporting stricter regulations of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years ago, can you give us any more example of his leading the charge for more oversight?

Palin: I think that the example that you just cited, with his warnings two years ago about Fannie and Freddie - that, that's paramount. That's more than a heck of a lot of other senators and representatives did for us.

Couric: But can you give me any other concrete examples? Because I know you've said Barack Obama is a lot of talk and no action. Can you give me any other examples in his 26 years of John McCain truly taking a stand on this?

Palin: I can give you examples of things that John McCain has done, that has shown his foresight, his pragmatism, and his leadership abilities. And that is what America needs today.

Couric: I'm just going to ask you one more time - not to belabor the point. Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation.

Palin: I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you.

All SNL would have to do is act out that transcript and I guarantee you will have people rolling in the aisles.

I watched Katie on the Early Show giving a recap of the interview and then showed some tape of the question about Iraq and Afghanistan and I finally realised who the new VP might be. Phoebe from Friends.

Take Coverrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Oh...my...God.

Palin: "I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you." Has she confused an interview on national television with a report for school?

I hope it was less painful to listen to than to read.

Alaskans must be looking for some good oil sands to bury their heads in in shame.

I'm no Palin fan, but I give Kouric a zero for her interview questioning.

She originally asked how McCain was going to reform wall street but then DISCOUNTS the one thing he said about reforming wall street (freddie/fannie) and asks her to give examples of other things he'll do.

Palin rightly says that reforming freddie/fannie is a huge job (since they make up 50% of the mortgage market) but doesn't give any more examples.

Instead of asking for more examples of what he is GOING to do..ie in the future, Kouric asks Palin to use examples of things McCain has done in the PAST regarding oversight. Well, duh, no wonder Palin couldnt' answer because NOTHING IN THE PAST HAS HAPPENED THAT CAN BE USED AS AN EXAMPLE THAT RELATES TO THIS CURRENT CRISIS.

She asked a question that couldn't be answered because there is no answer. It was designed to make Palin fail. Too bad for Palin she didn't just call Kouric out on it and instead just answer the original question which was about things McCain will do (as president)

Palin fell into the trap, which doesn't bode well for future interviews where interviewers pull the same stunt.

FAIL!

Couric asked what in addition to freddie and fannie. Those may be 50% of mortgages, but they are a slim portion of what goes on at wall st. Palin had nothing to offer, cuz McCain has no plan.

ffs..um isn't that exactly what i said? That after Palin couldn't answer, Kouric should have kept on asking about his plans to fix wall street, instead of asking about what he had done in the past....(26 years and all that other crap)??

Actually it was more painful to watch.

There's another point where she answers a question exactly the same as if of a remembered script. The bit about her explaining Rick Davis recusing himself from his lobbying activities. Katie asks for more explanation and she attempts to sort of except this time more haltingly but gives the exact same explanation as if she has actually shed more light on the matter.I didnt know whether to laugh or cry.

This really was painful to watch. I felt like puking thinking that this woman could be a heart attack away from the White House.

... and his alleged "maverick" reputation rests on a thin record, while in truth he is Senator McSame nearly always agreeing with the policies, principles, and people that have give the United States its worst foreign policy since our days of isolationism following WWI and our worst economy since the Great Depression.

Then, we have the junk science that guides the administration's approach to climate change and so on ... and on which McCain is sufficiently wishy-washy as to seem independent-minded from the perspective of members of Palin's church.
