A lot of cities in that part of the world have a lot of names because they've been part of various different empires and nations over the years and accordingly got named in many different languages. The major city of Western Ukraine was Lemberg as part of the Habsburg Empire, Lwow when it was Polish in the interwar years, Lvov under Soviet rule, and now Lviv in independent Ukraine.
