I am compiling a list of laws that the government ignores. Can anyone come up with more?

Here are two that come to mind.

1. Illegal immigration. The government sues states that try to enforce the laws regarding it and writes executive orders that defy it.
2. Porn. Why is it that prostitution is outlawed by pornography is not?

Here is a few:

1. Marijuana- Even the anti pot lawmakers are smoking the stuff, while telling their voter bases about it's evils, so most government officials, except a few law enforcement task forces ignore it.

2. Offshore holdings the rich set up to shield themselves from the IRS. The Government's law enforcement in this area is half hearted at best. More often than not, they simply turn a blind eye to it.

Enforcing all the laws on the books today is impossible, unless we want to turn America into a locked down police state, besides how would you describe "porn"? 50 years ago those cute images in SI's swimsuit edition, todays NBA cheerleaders, or the ladies in Maxim would very much qualify in that area. So....what can I say Whodey? It's an imperfect world. 😲

Why should a President elected by the people be expected to enforce laws he doesn't want to enforce. He was elected by the people, anything he does is the people's will!

If Obama is ignoring laws, either Congress is ignoring laws against him doing it, or there is no law that says he can't ignore laws. How can it be otherwise?

It is the nature of an executive to be able to enforce or ignore laws and regulations. Even cops do so. Under the Constitution, the executive branch was thought to be the most autocratic. Now SCOTUS is competing.

What kind of waffly legal system do you have over there anyway, where
executives can decide to ignore or enforce laws as they see please? Or did I
just completely misunderstand?

Not if the executive is accountable to an independent judiciary.

The executive is charged with enforcement. The judiciary, if independent, can alter or erase laws deemed unconstitutional, but the executive can do so immediately, without so much as a case with a legitimate cause in front of him.

In the case, for example of illegal immigration, he may simply reduce enforcement staff on the border to where it is ineffective. And the notion of an independent judiciary is a fairy tale.

It is the nature of the executive branch to have some wiggle room on enforcement. That's the nature of the beast. A cop for example can't and doesn't enforce every law with equal vigor. Most cops admit to having favorites, like speeding, or running red lights, changing lanes without signalling. Some discretion is probably a good thing, but at some point it becomes autocratic.

Another problem is that many modern pieces of legislation are so convoluted, arcane, and tangled that nobody knows how to read them, especially when there are literally thousands of pages of regulations which stem from the original bill.
