Is it illegal to eat a dead body? My grandfather once expressed the wish to be eaten by his family when he died.

This is bizarre on so many levels I don't know where to start!

The thigh is probably the best place to start.

Seriously, though, it's a question of law that I'd like answered. (Cannibalism seems quite acceptable to me under certain circumstances).

I think Armin Meiwes, the German cannibal, was convicted under straight manslaughter/murder charges - though I don't know if the judge included a cannibalism element?

And what circumstances would you consider it ok to eat human flesh? (Apart from the obvious plane-coming-down-with-the-Uruguayan-rugby-team-in-the-Andes scenario I mean)

After much deliberation I concur about the thigh.
AS far as I remember the weird thing (well one of the weird things) was that there were no laws in Germany that dealt with Cannibalism.

So, provided the flesh was of the windfall rather than murdered variety, it would not be illegal to eat it?

Personally, the circumstances would have to be fairly exceptional--as in my example of someone asking other people to do it (as an expression of a personal philosophy, in that particular case).

Cannibalism, historically, was done either for the protein or for religion. Now I think we have sufficient alternative sources of protein to eliminate the first reason. If someone wanted to eat flesh for religious reasons (perhaps to investigate Aztec roots), provided the flesh were permissibly obtained, that would be ok.

A third valid reason for cannibalism might be research.

I'm not sure why you would turn to a forum than.
