Moon1969, who's still mooning over the president's reelection, recently called the healthcare reform bill the greatest legislation of the 21st century (so far). I wanted to see if anyone else had any nominees. I personally think the most significant legislation of the 21st century was the patriot act. In the wake of the Sept. 11th attacks, this bill was passed under the guise of keeping Americans safe. Many argue that it has given the government unreasonable power to keep tabs on any American they want to. Here's the wiki

'Greatest legislation' and 'most significant legislation' are two different categories.

While I appreciate your post, I did not call the healthcare reform the "greatest legislation" or the "most signficant legislation." Instead, I said the healthcare reform (Obamacare) will go down in the history books as America's "greatest accomplishment" of the early 21st century. It is the legislation, upcoming implementation, and assimilation into our culture of this fantasitcally positive reform, that was a long-time coming, and will have the most positve impact on the greatest number of Americans and quality of life, and our humanity.

"Accomplishment" is a positive. "Greatest" means the "number one" accomplishment, and can relate to magnitude, impact, and quality. In contrast, while "most signifcant" could mean most impact, it could be positive, mixed, or negative.

I would agree that the healthcare reform act (Obamacare) is one of the most signficant pieces of legislation.

I would agree that the Patriot Act is also one of the most significant pieces of legislation, but arguably some of it in a negative sense, which is inapposite an accomplishment.

Definitely the presidential $1 coin act.

The authorization of force against Iraq ranks up there too.

Most significant social reform is repeal of don't ask don't tell.

I went back and looked, and this was in my last post in the other thread: "The healthcare reform will go down in the history books as the number one accomplishment by America in the early 21st century."

The number one accomplishment by America in the early 21st century. And while I was definitely viewing the healthcare reform act (legislation) as the seed and central point, I was also thinking about the resulting healthcare reform generally, including implementation and assimilation into our culture. Will be with us for generations, forever. A great great accomplishment by America.

You don't even understand it. It faces a mountain of legal challenges and technical hurdles. The Supreme Court just instructed the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals to reopen its examination of the PPACA, with the likely outcome being that Obamacare will once again be facing constitutional challenges, as early as next year. So...a-ha...

But since we're talking about legislation, a budget would be nice, don't you think? Obama hasn't passed one yet, even when he had both chambers.

Forgive me, I didn't mean to misrepresent your post. It just got me thinking about 21st century legislation and I didn't go back and check your wording before making my op. My apologies. Of course, the wording was also imprecise in my op and I apologize for that also. To clarify, I wanted to discuss what 21st century legislation would have the greatest long term impact on the US (negative or positive). I contend that long term the patriot act will have more effect (albeit negative) then the ppaca. Forgive me also for making a stupid pun of your name. I am hopelessly juvenile sometimes.

Hope, it is the NDAA. Essentially they can now arrest you without due process indefinately.

Nice. Thanks Big O.

The health care law is more of the same. It now gives corporate America even more power by allowing them to set tax rates via health care. Nothing new here.

I agree it is hard to deny that the Patriot Act may be the most signficant legislation of the early 21st century,
