I think she’s been punished enough. She’s an old woman now. It’s time.
@averagejoe1 saidI'm pretty sure Ajoe, we won't have to worry about Leslie Van Houten again.

She spent the best part of her life there. let her go.
@earl-of-trumps saidParole boards have been recommending her release since 2016, but California governors have been overriding their decisions based on, let's face it, political considerations. Newsom did again last year for the third time but a California Appeals Court stated:

"Van Houten has shown extraordinary rehabilitative efforts,
insight, remorse, realistic parole plans, support from family and
friends, favorable institutional reports, and, at the time of the
Governor’s decision, had received four successive grants of parole.
Although the Governor states Van Houten’s historical factors
“remain salient,” he identifies nothing in the record indicating
Van Houten has not successfully addressed those factors through
many years of therapy, substance abuse programming, and other
efforts. The CRA evaluator, although acknowledging the
historical factors, nonetheless concluded Van Houten presented a
low risk for recidivism. As in Lawrence, under these
circumstances Van Houten’s unchanging historical risk factors do
not provide some evidence that she is currently dangerous and
unsuitable for parole."

I have indicated numerous times on this board that I generally defer to fact finders in legal matters who have all available information in front of them whereas we members of the public do not. I find nothing in the Court's decision to be obviously incorrect and think that 53 years in prison is a sufficient punishment for a youthful offender, albeit one who did commit a heinous crime.
@averagejoe1 saidHer crime was heinous, in the service of an abominable ideology. Let her die in prison, I say. She already got a death sentence commuted, which was more clemency than she showed her victim.

@shavixmir saidIf I take someone's life, and enjoy it like a celebration for god sake, I should have my life punished, maybe even taken. Another jury may have taken her life. She was lucky to just be in prison. And again, why let her out? We can't bring Sharon Tate back. Why let her out?

@no1marauder saidLow risk for recidivism? That should be a factor? There are a lot of killers (husband kills wife in a rage) who will likely never find a reason to kill again. Let them out, I say.

@averagejoe1 saidBecause 50+ years punishment is more than enough.

@averagejoe1 saidYes, according to California law it's a factor and a major one.

@averagejoe1 saidA quibble, but Van Houten was not involved in the murders at Tate's residence.

She was not sentenced to life without parole, so she was legally entitled under California law to regular parole hearings.
@no1marauder saidI thought she was involved. I respectfully withdraw, don't know the facts. Thought she had killed someone, thus being sent to prison for decades. Maybe she just handed the knife to someone, accomplice, or felony murder, or whatever. Thought she killed. My error.
