The Norwegians don't need much health care. The high price of gas keeps most of them on bicycles. That lowers their blood pressure and makes them very healthy.

Not enough Americans can live with the fact that someone else might benefit more than they do

Conservative Americans don't subscribe to the French Revolution's notion of "Life, Liberty and Equality." Our American Revolution was premised on the idea of "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

Nonsense. What's sad is how many Americans are willing to trade their hard-won rights for Bismarkian cradle-to-grave welfare.

The actual slogan of the French Revolution was "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity."

The Framers certainly didn't reject the idea of equality. You might recall this from the Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,. "Life, liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are identified as natural rights, but I don't think they had a problem with either "equality or fraternity."

The US has tried socialism. For example, FDR tried it by creating Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac to help America emerge from the Great Depression that went bust here recently. LBJ tried it by creating the social security system that government steals from and will someday go bust. You see, money corrupts and there is a lot more of it in the US than in Norway. So tell me, if Norway had the government that the US has would you want to rely more on it? I just can't wait to see what they do with health care!!

You're correct, the slogan is "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity," however, the framers of the U.S. Constitution rejected the notion of French/European notions of "equality." If they'd wanted to all be "equal," they'd never have left Europe or overthrown the Crown. Regarding the "...all men are created equal...," you'll notice that the emphasis is on "created," and the document says nothing about "shall remain equal" or "will be subjected to equal outcomes."

Neither of those are "socialism". Both acheived their goals. That politicans and admins are screwing these things up NOW, doesn't change that fact.

Let me know when Social Security goes "bust".

HUH? You think having a King shows a commitment to "equality"??

The French Revolution said nothing about "equal outcomes" either. Both revolutions believed in equality of rights. Here's something you probably never read. http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/rightsof.asp

Let you know when it goes bust? Kinda like letting you know when Freddie and Fanny go bust? I don't think I will need to notify you personally. LOL.

Although these programs may not equate socialism, they are socialistic in nature.

Trading economic rights is only a small fragment of liberty.
In case you arent aware, the US is not the land of liberty compared to others. There are about 20 other countries who are 'freer'.

The US has been trading away rights of speech and religion and search and seizure and due process... these things are eroding. The conservative american (especially those on the religious right) are all about sacrificing these things of late.

Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration over the means and production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society, in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly.

Although social security does not involve itself with production and distribution of goods, it does concern itself with creating an egalitarian society.
