As I predicted months ago, Romney has gotten a nice little bounce from clinching the nomination as, with 3 of the 4 polls cited by RCP ending on 4/17 or later showing Romney with a slight lead or even (http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/general_election_romney_vs_obama-1171.html), I'd say the race is pretty close to a toss up if the election were held today.
Obviously, the an economic swing could decide this election as it did in 2008, but assuming the same kind of economic news we get these days (some okay, some good, some weak, some confusing), this election will come down to whether Romney can succeed in pinning the blame on the Obama administration for the sluggish recovery or not?
The fact is that people expected to be out of this mess by now and it hasn't really happened. Does Obama succeed in selling the idea that Bush got us in so bad that it's going to take me a long time to get us out/ it's Congressional Republicans' fault or does Romney succeed in selling the idea that the Obama administration's measures have not succeeded in driving lower unemployment and faster growth?
All the rest (silver spoons, expensive vacations, etch-a-sketch, working women, etc. etc. etc.) is hot air.

They can't brag about the anemic economy. They can't brag about their non-existent energy policy. They can't talk about improvements in govt efficiency or transparency (GSA anyone?) They can't talk about reducing deficits, or even getting one Dem to vote for an Obama budget.

So it's all going to be about Romney being rich, Romney's dog, Romney's wife, Romney's silver spoon, throwing Granny off a cliff, how Romney is just so out of touch etc. And the whole time Romney can talk about Obama's utter failure as a leader. If Obama wins, we deserve him.

Originally posted by SleepyguyIt doesn't necessarily have to be all about Romney's silver spoon. US elections are won by the candidate who appeals to moderates. Does Romney have the same appeal, is he as likeable as Reagan or even George W.? Not really. The economy is doing poorly, Obama has done a lousy job, but unemployment is coming down (it seems, at least) and it will probably be good enough for Obama's re-election.

Do you think that number can be reached before the election this fall? If not, do you think Obama can win with an unemployment rate above that number?
