"With the approach of the seventh anniversary of 9/11, Saudi liberal journalists have noted the changes in their country that resulted from these events, and the changes that came in its aftermath - particularly, that Saudi society is currently undergoing a shift away from fundamentalism and towards liberalism."

Good news I daresay.

Indeed!! In fact, I heard just the other day that, although women still cannot drive as of yet, they now are given permission to pump gas into the car....properly veiled head to toe of course. 😛

I agree, its good news.

Saudi society is quite strict so I guess a bit of liberalism wouldn't do any harm.

as long as they take it slowly...a conservative backlash that might occur if things moved too quickly could be worse than the current situation.

What interests me about the news source I got this from is how completely unreported these things are in my local media. It puts me in touch with my ignorance -- very valuable!

memri articles should be taken with large amounts of salt. They have a lot of articles that are completely untrue, but sometimes, they have real gems that go unreported anywhere else.

Well of course, like any media source. You don't believe that half of what you see on CNN is true, do you? But the selection -- whether the stories are true or not -- is very telling.

Did you read the one about the Pakistani 'security expert' denouncing Mumbai as a plot by 'Indian Zionists'? Ye gods ... The Egyptian cleric threatening Obama ('convert or get out'😉 seems to have strayed from a Star Wars set. But these horrible stories are -- somewhat -- counter-balanced by reasonable statements from intelligent individuals. All in all the selection seems fairly balanced.

I agree, better slow and steady progress, than risk a backlash!😏
