if the cartels took out Calderon, and the state collapsed (more than it may be already) would the US go in?

does Calderon even need to worry about the cartels personally, then?

Why would the cartels take out Calderon? They benefit from his policies.

To drag up the old British Isles feud once more...from above link:

Thirty men from the Saint Patrick's Battalion, a group of former United States Army soldiers who joined the Mexican side, were executed en masse during the battle. They had been previously captured at the Battle of Churubusco. Colonel William S. Harney specified that they were to be hanged with Chapultepec in view and that the precise moment of their death was to occur when the U.S. flag replaced the Mexican tricolor atop the citadel.

The Saint Patrick's Battalion (Spanish: Batallón de San Patricio) was a unit of 175 to several hundred immigrants (accounts vary) and expatriates of European descent who fought as part of the Mexican Army against the United States in the Mexican-American War of 1846 to 1848. Most of the battalion's members had deserted or defected from the U.S. Army. Made up primarily of ethnic Irish and German Catholic immigrants, the battalion included Canadians, English, French, Italians, Poles, Scots, Spaniards, Swiss, and native Mexicans, most of whom were Roman Catholics.

Mexican police defused an attempt to kill Mexican President Felipe Calderon by a drug cartel agent, the Federal Public Security Ministry said Monday.

Ramon Eduardo Pequeno Garcia, a section chief in Mexico’s Federal Police, said in a press conference that Dimas Diaz Ramos was planning to carry out the attack when he was arrested Sunday in the Mexican state of Sinaloa along with four other suspects.

Diaz Ramos is also suspected of being a financial agent for the Pacific Cartel led by Mexico’s two most wanted drug czars, Ismael Zambada aka ‘El Mayo,’ and Joaquin Guzman ‘El Chapo,’ who escaped from a top security prison in January 2001.

Calderon, who is meeting Monday with his colleagues from the US and Canada, Barack Obama and Stephen Harper respectively in Guadalajara, deployed Mexico’s army in 2006 to clamp down on drug trafficking, which has claimed more than 9,000 lives since 2008.
