Donald Trump has lowest approval ratings of any President in US history

Just 44 per cent of respondents gave Mr Trump their approval, making him the only President since polls began to hold a negative approval rating at such an early stage in his White House tenure.

However, there is little surprise expressed among Americans to the way in which Mr Trump has begun his presidency, with 78 per cent saying he is handling things exactly as they would have expected.

Take a look at things a year from now, and you'll have a better idea of where all this is heading. Who knows, approval may get better for President Trump (pigs might fly too but I doubt it!)

It turns out you don't need high post-election approval ratings to get elected president.

It turns out that polls are meaningless, and often false.

No, just by those who voted for him and I think that number will eventually rise.

There's danger in US President Trump having an extremely low approval rating.
That would motivate him to attempt anything, however foolish or destructive to improve it.

Before Argentina invaded (or reclaimed) the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands in 1982,
UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had a low approval rating. After the invasion
initially succeeded (in part due to her failure to send strong enough signals earlier
to Argentina), Thatcher was worried that her own party might compel her to resign.
So Prime Minister Thatcher refused to accept any diplomatic compromise and took
the UK resolutely to war, aiming for a decisive military victory. After that was achieved,
her popularity soared, enabling her to press forward with her hard right-wing policies.

So would not US President Trump crave a 'glorious' war in order to improve his popularity?

It all depends on how many people become too scared to speak out against the new Fascist state.

Unfortunately for the rest of us on this planet I think you are on point with the comparison to Thatcher and the mechanism she chose, a war with a nation Britain could convincingly beat provides a how to scenario for Trump's Presidency to be great.

But you just suggested the polls are wrong. Does Donald Trump have a higher approval rating than polls indicate?
