Most Republicans and especially Trump's campaign are running for president (again) on fixing the border. So let's review the numbers. How did mega-MAGA policies do during the 4 years as president (2 of which included control of both houses of congress)? Here are 4 facts:
1) Illegal border crossings in the US went up-
In fiscal year 2016, Border Patrol agents witnessed about 100,000 successful entries. By 2018, the number had risen to nearly 128,000. In 2019, it hit 150,000. Through four months of 2020, it was on pace to hit almost 156,000.

2) Interior deportations in the US went down -
In 2020, the removal of illegal immigrants from the interior of the United States was the lowest as an absolute number and as a share of the illegal immigration population since ICE was created in 2003

3) Legal migration ground nearly to a halt - perhaps because people in his administration didn't discriminate if they were legal or illegal immigrants? They were successful at preventing skilled workers who filled out proper paperwork from entering. This has the unintended consequence of massively increasing demand for illegal workers, because, let's be honest, when's the last time you saw a white kid hanging sheet rock or picking strawberries.

4) Zero initiatives to codify immigration reform - It was all the Democrats fault from the beginning. We know that. But at some point the bluster needs to turn into action. No immigration law was passed. No immigration law was even written or debated or advocated for by Trump. He could have at least pretended to care, but it turns out his voters/cult followers don't seem to care if he cares or not.
And this failure is the Republican front-runner? We think he can fix it after he made a broken system worse? Consider me among the skeptical.
