Man Defends Property Against Youths

How would you rule in the following situation: a man sprays fox urine on youths attempting to festoon his house with toilet paper. The man was charged with misdemeanor assault. I'd be tempted in the opposite direction -- give the man a medal and a public commendation.

Hasn't the pendulum of punishing 'reaction to provocation' swung far enough? Isn't it time to start punishing the provoquers as well?

To be fair, the article doesn't mention action taken against the youths, if any.

Me, too -- fox urine is very original! But I'd be tempted to find out how he got it. Also, were the youths festooning indiscriminately or did they single him out, and if so, why? Those are the paths my curiosity would take.

Fox urine is commmercially available as a rodent repellant.

I speculate he is a cantankerous old curmudgeon whom no one likes.

Oh, right. And how is it extracted? Is it the genuine article?

If there's any animal cruelty involved, my sympathy is withdrawn!

I find it disturbing that old man's pee won't have the same effect. I had
a grandfather ones. I know I did, but no way in hell would I follow mum
to visit him.

Of course, I'm not a rodent. Not really, no. Rodents may have
appreciated his stench a whole lot more.

😕

Commercially available, hu? He could have been a wealthy, wealthy
man.

Wait a minute. Do I smell an idea for my days of incontinence to come?

The monopoly on violence needs to be in the hands of government. Only if police cannot reasonably be expected to be able to intervene in time, self-defense should be allowed to a limited extent. In this case, the man could have easily called the police so I don't see why he should get a medal.

So if the man should not defend his property, who cleans up the mess these kids intend to make? I suppose the man just calls the government and they send out some workers. And the government also pays for any damages, such as if someone trips over a flower-pot or something...?

Does spraying the kids with fox urine clean up the mess?

The kids never got as far as creating the mess this time, apparently.

Well, clearly "mess" isn't a serious enough threat to a person's safety that it warrants assaulting children.
