I have seen how they drive and I can tell you they have an innate sense of what is around them, it looks like chaos but I can tell you from seeing them up close and personal they watch out and don't want to hit anyone or anything since whatever they drive, if it is a mule driven coach or a caddy, they don't want to lose what they have in an accident so I would say they are more vigilant than us here.
They have no traffic laws? I guess you found that out in your many world journeys.

I can tell you from experience the drivers with the worse record are not from India, they are from Israel. They park on the sidewalk, at a colosseum across the street where we lived, a soccer game would fill up the street with cars 3 deep and good luck getting our car out to drive somewhere. They are also impolite, if you wait more than 2 seconds after a green light, they start honking. My car got pushed about ten feet by a driver of a huge truck who apparently didn't see us, stopped at a light, his truck oozed slowly and pushed our car almost into oncoming traffic, I honked and such to no avail.
