Obama called his bluff and in the face of polls showing that the people weren't buying his "I need to be in Washington to save the economy" BS, John McCain will show up for the debate after all. Guess this shows who has more backbone and an ability to stick to his guns; even Huckabee is lambasting McCain for trying to cancel the debate. More signs of a campaign in meltdown.
As someone wisely stated yesterday, "McCain's put himself in a pickle; if no bailout is enacted by Friday night (which is very likely), he'll either have to go back on his promise or skip the debate which the overwhelming number of Americans don't want. Either way he loses."

I mean ... a situation at hand with such a crises going on as a result of the "anything goes" economic and financial policies of the Reps .... and looking at the resulting chaos in the Republican party, it would be madness to vote in those who are responsible for this worldwide mess.

The financial system desperately needs reforms. The Dems are the ones who have to clean up this mess and they have to lay the basis for a new anti-corruption and anti-greed financial system. The Reps have failed in a mindboggling way.
... and let's not forget the dubious role Alan Greenspan, former Chairman of the Board of Governors of the United States Federal Reserve played in the making of this crises. What is happening now is not some natural disaster, simply happening to us, but this global crises is the result of failed economic and financial policies ... and the end is not in sight. .... and still nobody in Washington is talking about the gigantic national debt of the United States. Very bad leadership indeed.
"After 2001, some congressional leaders and others criticized him, for certain statements they found to[1] overstep the Fed's traditional purview of monetary policy, and for other statements they saw as overly supportive of the policies of President George W. Bush. In 2004 Business Week Magazine[2] and others criticized his keeping of low interest levels too long and his concurrent praise of sub-prime lending vehicles such as ARMs as leading to a housing bubble. Some, including Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, assign a large degree of culpability for the devastating Economic crisis of 2008 to Mr. Greenspan. Stiglitz stated that Greenspan "didn't really believe in regulation; when the excesses of the financial system were noted, [he and others] called for self-regulation -- an oxymoron."[7][8] Greenspan, according to the New York Times, says he himself is blameless. [9]"

I really did not understand his "I will not attend the debate if,......" thing. One of them will have to handle it anyway, so he should let us know how he wants to solve it. This debate is the best opportunity to do so.
I wonder, maybe the debate tonight will turn out to be a disaster for the Reps and leave them scattered and wondering where they went wrong ... they are clueless .... everybody seems to know except them ...
Originally posted by Flower04It's simple; he thought Obama would cave or that the American people would think he was being "statesmanlike". He badly misjudged both his opponent and the voters. Unless Obama falls apart in the debate tonight (something that seems extremely unlikely), McCain's campaign is in deep, perhaps terminal, trouble.

Originally posted by no1marauderHe saw this as a chance to get out of being called out in front of the nation. How many times do you think his record of deregulation will be cited tonight? It was also an opportunity for them to get sad Sarah out of the debate with Biden. They tried to reschedule this debate for the night that the VP candidates are to debate. He saw it as win/win, instead he looks like a clown.

David Letterman said, "You rubbed me the wrong way John McCain and when you've rubbed me the wrong way that means, well, that you've rubbed a guy the wrong way." 😕
edit 4: He also said, "John McCain wants to postpone the debates until a bailout plan is put in motion. Sara Palin also wants to postpone the debates... until the election is over."
I think in his humour he is accurately capturing the political disaster that is the rebuplican ticket.

Originally posted by whodeyThe letterman show itself really has nothing to do with it, the point is that McCain was saying he needed to get back to DC asap when he didn't really mean it.
