The Dutch minister in charge of "foreigner affairs" has been clinging on to power like a louse clings to pubic hair.
She's from the VVD, the Dutch liberal/capitalist party.
BUT TODAY SHE'S WENT AND DONE MY BLOODY HEAD IN!!!
Seriously, I normally wouldn't bore you with Dutch politics, but this is too abstract not to mention...
"I feel that people should be banned from speaking any language but Dutch on the streets of the Netherlands."
How's that?
She's referring to a Rotterdam initiative. Rotterdam, the same city which has banned low-income families from moving there...
This from the same minister who sent asylum seeker's dossiers to the Congo...and then repatriated the asylum seekers...who were then tortured and murdered...because of their bloody dossiers!!!
This from the same minister who has threatened to reveal personal dossier information of refugees who speak to the media.
This from the same minister who's passed legislation that everybody coming to Holland has to follow courses in "Being and speaking Dutch." When 70% of the media refuse to use the new official Dutch spelling and no one knows how to spell anything anymore!
This from the same minister who said: "Africans are better off living in Africa....home is home."
All of this in the country which has banned the burkha....
and people wonder why I'm fleeing the damned place???

The Fundamentalists are winning all over, Ivanhoe.
You can't wear a burkha, but you can wear sunglasses!
They want to ban speaking anything but Dutch...I bet ordering a big mac is going to turn hysterically funny.

The funny thing is in Holland you've got different provinces and in the Dutch province of Friesland, they still speak native Frisian (which is similar to Old Scottish; a hint of gaelic in it).
As soon as Verdonk opened her trap and put so many feet in it (again), the Fries party for independance (sort of like an independance party for Sussex or something) filed a complaint that she was banning traditional languages.
If it wasn't so serious I'd be laughing all the way to one of the 80 deportation camps...

Or "pig".
You'll see that there are many "old" languages that build up English as it is today. The same goes for German and Dutch too.
Although they've incorporated less Anglo-Saxon (except rude words) and less Roma.
Originally posted by shavixmirOr Laudanum, Compendium (dunno about Totorum)...indeed, words borrowed from Latin. But when you talk about the origins of a language, you start with the oldest descendant. So, the Old Frisians who went to England in their jolly-boats jabbered in Old Frisian, which changed with time into Anglo-Frisian, and kept borrowing as it went along...most of the Latin got stuffed in during the late Middle Ages / Renaissance.
Yes...but if you compare aquarium, for instance...
