Almost none of the latin in English (of which there is a lot) is derived from when the Romans were here, but from the latin-derived French which the Normans brought over.

I know the use of foreign words to signify an education is diminished, although some writers and newspapers like to throw in a French phrase or two - it signifies nothing but elitism to me - either speak French or English but don't use French words just to confuse those who can't speak it.
Although there is a certain je ne sai quoi about making yourself seem superior which gives rise to a great joie de vivre.
