Yep.
Almost none of the latin in English (of which there is a lot) is derived from when the Romans were here, but from the latin-derived French which the Normans brought over.

The educated used to be distinguished from the vulgar by their speech, "educated speech" containing a great many more words of foreign origin. Does the rise of "yob culture" signal the atavistic resurgence of Old English roots?

Hmm. Not sure.
I know the use of foreign words to signify an education is diminished, although some writers and newspapers like to throw in a French phrase or two - it signifies nothing but elitism to me - either speak French or English but don't use French words just to confuse those who can't speak it.
Although there is a certain je ne sai quoi about making yourself seem superior which gives rise to a great joie de vivre.

I had the impression that many people nowadays are trying hard to appear anything but educated. Football elitism.

I show my classical education by continuously talking about weird sexual practices.

pretty much from 75 along with "the villiage reef is their home, built on a pileof gold" and "we love rugby braaivleis sunny skies and chevrolets" and everyone stayed home for "Rich Man Poor Man" and endless jaques coustouex? doco's we used to call gloop gloop movies and classical music on Sunday night and I think Hans Jankorfsky?? trio playing a kind of sanitized brubeck. there was only one sabc at the time and i'll never forget the travesty of them dubbing the sweeney into afrikaans and all those german police dramas into english. but they gave me the brady bunch once a week, the new avengers with joanna lumley as purdey, the professionals with bodie and doyle and colour from the word go. always found it absurdly ironic that a racist government would insist that for the first few years at least you had to purchase a 67cm colour tv

Most of the things you mention are laws etc which actually got passed which means that it is either not a democracy or a lot of people agree with it. Why are you ranting at the minister alone and not saying "This from the same people who ...."

Because she's the one thinking up this rubbish (not the refugee laws though...they already existed, she's just persued them with fascist-like determination).

And I have personal problem with her.
