The decision by Moldovan president Maia Sandu to launch referendum on constitutional change which would lead to membership of the EU is looking like backfiring as the voting outcome draws to a close and appears to be curiously close to the UK % outcome of the Brexit referendum in 2016. The referendum coincides with a parallel Presidential election in which Sandu is also seeing slip away from her as the anti EU parties gain momentum and her polling slips.
The referendum decision was largely triggered in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but it seems like even the threat and fear-mongering of a possible future of living on Putin’s border hasn’t swayed enough of the Moldavian voting public. One wonders why this is with all the fear and loathing being propagated around the big bad Bear looming over their giant neighbour, Ukraine.
Sandu has shifted gear claiming mass Russian voting interference and claims that she had unequivocal proof of it; although strangely this proof has not been forthcoming as yet. Sounds a bit like the rhetoric coming from the US shouting about election fraud when things don’t go their way in the polls. Hmm.
Moldovans don’t want to join the EU and no amount of fear-mongering is going to make them. Like many countries they want to maintain political independence whilst working closely with their community of neighbour nation states. They are resisting the pernicious tentacles of the EU to grab political power under the guise of security in the EU.
Perhaps the those who voted ‘against’ will soon be vilified as jingoistic morons, thick-as-s*** racists who don’t understand the pseudo intellectual benefits of giving over vast swathes of your national political governance to a body set on gaining more and more control over Europe. Well the ‘fear of invasion’ tact hasn’t worked, so I doubt a slew of insults is going to make much difference.
Go Moldova! It’s your country, your political independence, you stand up for it.

Strike up a great deal with third world nations like the UK.
@shavixmir saidAh yes the insults; they work so well as an argument.

@divegeester saidI just can't be arsed, to tell you the truth.
Ah yes the insults; they work so well as an argument.
My hearts not even in the insults at the moment.
I think I may have to go and get drunk.
@shavixmir saidI enjoy the fact that we actually have more in common than we don’t.

Mine’s whatever you’re having.
@shavixmir saidWhich one? We have lots going on over here at various levels and regions.
@divegeester
Hey, how did the election result turn out?
@divegeester saidUhhh… what’s the thread about?

@divegeester
It appears that they have voted narrowly in favor.

I wonder if there will be shrill calls for a recount or a second referendum based on accusations that the electorate are thick and not understanding the issue 😄
@shavixmir saidWhat lack of response?
Your lack of response says enough.
When you asked the question I did not realise that you were pointing to the outcome, I do now. I thought you were taking about something else, sorry. It is an outcome, which unlike yourself in the UK Brexit referendum outcome did not accept, i on the other completely accept this outcome as a democratic choice.
Despite my disdain for the EU, you will NOT hear me slurring the Moldovan electorate who vote “for”, you won’t hear me insulting them and you won’t hear me calling for a second referendum based on the closeness of the count. Which is precisely what happened in the lead up to and post the UK vote.
I’m a true democrat Shav.
@divegeester saidThere are allegations of Russian meddling to influence the result. It remains to be seen how successful they were, and what countermeasures were taken.
Well that’s that.
