“Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor, and his cronies, not content with destroying free speech in public schools, have set for themselves a new target: destroying press freedom and every Floridian’s right to criticize public officials. Along the way, they aim to overturn the most important first amendment US supreme court decision of the 20th century.

The latest bill to raise eyebrows sounds like it’s made up by the opponents of Florida Republicans to make them sound ridiculous. Unfortunately, it’s real. The proposed law, authored by state legislator Jason Brodeur, would – I kid you not – compel “bloggers” who criticize the governor, other officers of the executive branch, or members of the legislature to register with the state of Florida. Under the bill, anyone paid to write on the internet would have to file monthly reports every time they utter a government official’s name in a critical manner. If not, they’d face potentially thousands of dollars in fines.

DeSantis was always a thin-skinned Trump wanna-be.

That's exactly why Disney incurred his thunderous wrath: they had the temerity to criticize him.

The ultra right wingers like DeSantis and his kind have rendered the term woke meaningless.
They use it as a shorthand or code for their political enemies and now any part of civil society that is deemed unfriendly to their aims.
Coupled with Trumps “Justice vengeance and retribution” speech at CPAK people really should be getting very concerned about 2024 and highlight the hell out if this obvious direction of travel for the Republican Party.

This thread deserves a lot more attention. This is the future of the U.S.

That’s what concerns me too, even the liberal media seems to position DeSantis as the soft option to Trump. My worry is that he’s just the more electable version of Trump.

I think people are torn between loving freedom and hating bloggers.

You say this in a country where Hispanics were rounded up without due process and subjected to inhumane treatment in prison chain gangs? The same country the man responsible was pardoned and treated like a hero by Republicans?

You know, the same Republicans who overturned abortion rights and are now pushing a law banning the press from criticizing them?

How do you watch Republicans continually strip away rights and then say this so casually?
