The electoral college has chosen a president against the popular vote totals only three times in history: 1876, 2000 and 2016. All three times the electoral college ended up with the Republican as President – which is why Democrats, all of a sudden, don’t like the system.
Why are republicans so obnoxious?

The USA is too big for a population vote.
Yes, it's time this failed experiment was broken up into many smaller nations.

Blue states are predominantly democrat and Red States are predominantly Republican.
Blue Democratic states have way more people than Red Republican States.
So those populous regions..."the coastal states" would decide every election and cancel out the rest.
Texas isn't a "coastal state". Pennsylvania isn't a coastal state.

Safe Blue States and safe Red States are both irrelevant to the outcome of the election (when was the last time a presidential candidate made California a priority for campaigning?). Elections in the US are decided by swing states, and that's where candidates focus their energies and direct their promises. So all those small Red States are taken for granted by Republican candidates and ignored by Democratic ones. In a popular vote system, by contrast, one Democratic vote in Wyoming or one Republican vote in Rhode Island are just as important as any one vote in the major swing states. Presidential candidates would have to appeal to the whole country.

Incidentally, I'm not particularly sniping at the US; we have exactly the same problem in Britain - decades of unrepresentative governments because of an electoral system that doesn't reflect the popular vote. The last UK government elected with a popular majority was the so-called "National" Government in 1931. Since then, government after government has won thumping majorities with less than 50% of the actual vote. The radical transformation of our country implemented by Thatcher, then by Blair, and now by the zealots in charge of the present "Conservative" Party would have been impossible with a civilised and consensual political system.
