Citizen Kane was dull and over-acted. The spaghetti westerns are crap. African queen is one of Bogey's worst; Key Largo, The Maltese Falcon and the Petrified Forest were all far superior. And, of course, Treasure of Sierra Madre, is one of the greatest of all time.

Let's start with in the "modern era":

Pulp Fiction
...[text shortened]... unner
The Two Towers

One Foreign Film:

Seven Samurai
There were a lot of rip-offs, but A Fistful Of Dollars and the other spaghetti westerns Clint did were a new genre.

Loved Bladerunner, Alien, and Raging Bull. And I'll expand my Bogey collection.

Casino
Lonesome Dove - a miniseries, but brilliantly acted. "Ah believe ah'll have a little respect with mah whiskey."

True Grit - Jeff Bridges actually outacted John Wayne.
The Green Berets - speaking of The Duke...
Apocalypse Now
Raiders Of The Lost Ark

Absolutely do not understand the devotion to The Big Lebowski, but The Usual Suspects was fantastic.

Memento
Run Lola Run - not much plot but completely kinetic.
The Omen
The Exorcist - Omen and Exorcist are the two scariest movies I've ever seen.

Run Lola Run is one I forgot. Lola is a great girlfriend. Wore me out just watching. I have the kinetic soundtrack. Several video clips on youtube.

Two more:

Day of the Jackal -DeGaulle as target of assassination, we follow the assassin's preparations.

Three Days of the Condor - R. Redford as CIA guy on the run from...whom? With Faye Dunaway.

One that no-one has mentioned yet is 'Oldboy' (2003, IMDB rating 8.4)
If you don't mind foreign/subtitled films with dark undertones, it is simply a must-see.

It was remade recently with a certain Josh Brolin... I am still yet to watch this.

The drama of postmodernism is the "death" of the avante garde: Cinema is dead, and film these days is just so much radio ga ga. If ever there were a time where "taste" was directed against the exception in favour of the mediocre, that time is now.

I humbly submit:

Thunderbolt & Lightfoot
La Reine Margot
Yojimbo
City Lights

I found the Peter Greenaway Film "Drowning by numbers" worthwhile to watch.
