They can't turn you away
but they can sure as hell
sue you for the money
after you're discharged........
They use collection agencies and/or
garnish your paycheck.
They can turn you away if it's not an emergency but most hospitals don't.

Medical bills cause a major portion of bankruptcies in the US though the exact percentage is disputed. https://www.thebalance.com/medical-bankruptcy-statistics-4154729

Agreed.

Canada and it's Socialist health care is a joke.

Almost 5 weeks will have passed when I get a blood test and then they will put me in line for other tests...
Up here you could die just waiting for a diagnosis. 🤷

Oh but it's "free" they say 🙄
Taxing everyone 15% on everything is not "free"...
So you think that it's O.K.
for someone to lose their home
and their life savings if they should
happen to get seriously ill?

@Contenchess in Canada no one dies due to a lack of insurance. Canadians can purchase private insurance to cover things not covered by the government plan. In the U.S. insurance companies generally contract with providers so you are usually unable to go to any doctor or hospital without paying extra out of pocket fees. Canadians pay far less for the same prescription drugs U. ...[text shortened]... on, that if Canadians can leave the purchasing pools, the government’s market power would diminish."
Wow. Anyway, a few short answers. My friend pays NOTHING for his meds, ins covers it. He also has no co-pay. Nothing. Whew.
Canadians can go bankrupt for paying for med care?. Not with proper insurance, in the USA. Maybe you and I are speaking two diff languages?
I dont get why you wrote all this Canada stuff. I spect every country has its own way of doing things, so what is the point? NO, dont answer that!!!!

@AverageJoe1 "proper" health insurance. Sorry, the as e are for profit businesses. Their mission is for you to pay high premiums for as little care as possible. Most who go bankrupt due to health care had insurance.

Marauder may weigh in on this. We would all feel sorry for such a predicament, and I am sure you all send money into the Veterans' Tunnels to Towers fund.
He says there should be a 'safety net' for such situations, but stops short of explaining it.

Libs do not like anything going on where there is a profit to be made. It jars their senses. So I can see why a lib would say that.
But get into the real world. We have something here called competition, probably the most in the world. And 'proper' means something diff from one person to another. I want my insurance to cover absolutely everything. My Homeowners policy just paid to rid my crawl space of some pesky mold. Amazing. I love this country.
So I have what is for me a 'proper' policy.....can you not pick one you like, Phranny? And God forbid they make a profit. Why, the company should share all those profits with the secretaries!!
Jesus. How did I find all you characters?

his workplace pays for it. that's SOMETHING. that something is money he is not getting as a paycheck and is less than he would pay in taxes for socialized healthcare. Now your (fictional, you don't have any friends) friend can't look for a better job because he would lose his healthcare . He cannot start a business because he might lose his healthcare. Whenever he feells like his boss can fire him because in many of the most wonderful states of america, an employer can fire at will and then your imaginary friend will lose his healthcare. Whenever he feels like it his boss may change the insurance for something cheaper and your imaginary friend will lose access to his favourite doctor.

"Maybe you and I are speaking two diff languages?"
We can understand stupid just fine, don't worry. It's you who doesn't understand us.

An example of a better system.

How can you presume to know what we think?
Just because 'your boy' TRUMP doesn't pay taxes,
doesn't mean that you don't, does it?
How can you say that we are against free enterprise?
I can only speak for myself and, in my case, you are WRONG AGAIN.
TRUMP CHEATS and so, he wrongly thinks everyone does.
TRUMP LIES and again, he supposes everyone lies,
BERNIE SANDERS, an avowed Socialist is not against free enterprise.
My point to this rambling is, that you can't assume
facts not in evidence, nor can you assume to know what one person,
or a group of people think......
If you're a prognosticator, let's go to the race track.
