Read this link, see what you think. Its called a 'thorium reactor' which takes some energy to kickstart but it cannot explode or allow making nuclear bomb material. Also there is a huge amount of thorium in the world, it can also deal with the waste from uranium reactors. Win win sounds like so why don't other governments jump on this one with another manhattan projects. It looks like an incredible breakthrough.

Originally posted by scottishinnzThe plot thickens: look at this site, it has, amongst other things, a history of nuclear energy research, fascinating in its own right. It seems though that the US shot itself in the foot in this thorium technology, they permently buried 3000 tons of thorium nitrate which could have produced enough energy in thorium reactors to fuel the whole US for two years. Nice. It seems the basic idea of thorium has been known for decades but as usual, politics kills basic scienctific research.
Sounds great! Definitely a great technology.
