Both sides were 'right' and 'wrong', and the issues are numerous as to why the North and South went to war. Ask a northerner, and you will get one opinion; ask a southerner, and you'll get another opinion. My advise to you is to check out a History of the American Civil War book and read to make up your own mind. England was almost drawn into it, so that aspect might excite you...good reading...

drawn into it - my god man we were running guns to the south. bit of cash to be made shipping slaves and cotton you know.

To be fair, slavery was illegal by this point in the British Empire, as was trading in slaves. I think Britain was just trying to get at the US for being rebellious and generally inconvenient, and would rather that the States had become/stayed weak and divided.
