Listened to Background Briefing on ABC's Radio National yesterday - http://www.abc.net.au/rn/backgroundbriefing/stories/2006/1726921.htm
It explores the notion of Australia developing a nuclear enrichment program for nuclear energy programs.
Just wondering what other people think about this, particularly in light of the recent hype about Iran?
Would it be okay for Australia to do this?
And if so, why not Iran?
If not, why not?
Originally posted by amannionIn my opinion, it's okay for anyone to do it who can do it. I don't see any right or wrong in developing something. If that something is misused (a subjective term to be sure) then there will no doubt be repercussions of one kind or another.

Everyone wants power.....its a sick world we live in

Name me one country who has a nuclear enrichment program that doesn't have nukes?
(Do any of the scandinavian countries have enrichment programs for their reactors or do they get the fuel from someone else?)
But couldn't it happen?
I can't imagine Australia for example, developing nuclear weapons. Given our close strategic alliance with the US, we hardly need them do we?
Originally posted by amannionI don't know about Scandanavian countries but I'll assume that because some of them are NATO members that they have nukes or at least have the capabilities to make a nuke.

Canada for example is in the same boat as Australia - that is, deciding whether enrichment is the way to go.
Originally posted by amannionYeah but Canada has the technical knowledge to build a nuke. That's my point to begin with. Everyone who has nuclear power for electricity also has the techology to build a bomb.
