Why do so many people spend their time pumping their religous beliefs online if religion is suppose to be between you and god/allah?

" ..... if religion is suppose to be between you and god/allah "

..... not only between you and God.

It is a misconception to assume that religion should be or is a private thing. This is an attempt by people, secular people ànd certain religious people, to "neutralise" the influence of religion. It is a political stance that is clearly not in line with what Christian teachings are all about. It is an attempt to "cleanse" public life from stances that are not welcomed by liberal ideology.

I'm just curious, Ivanhoe, but why do you think that your religious
principles should be public policy? Let's take birth control as an
example. Presumably, if the Roman Catholic Church made the
laws in the US, they would make birth control illegal. They do
so on the basis of religious belief.

However, those with 'liberal ideologies' who make the laws here
say that it is not illegal, but do not force people to have it. They
allow the people the freedom to interpret what is moral and what
isn't based on their own beliefs and conscience. This means that
the Roman Catholic can, if s/he chooses, not to take birth control,
while those who aren't aren't forced to adhere to a belief that they
find problematic.

This is what I think rwingett means when he says the imposition of
beliefs. By voting to allow birth control, he is not forcing you to take
it or not take it (though I'm sure he hopes you do!), but by your voting
to prohibit birth control, you impose your beliefs upon him.

This, I think, is his fear, and I think it is a justified one.

Or, what if another religious group grabbed secular power and made laws banning Catholicism? Secular humanism is the way to go ...

Let's make this a little more feasible. Let's say that a very
Calvinistic group of Christians came into power (like ultra-
ultra-orthodox Presbyterians, or something) and decided that
all religious images were offensive to God and to humankind.
Let's say that they insisted that churches remove what they
considered idolotrous images from their façades or that my
Italian neighbors had to remove their statue of the Blessed
Virgin Mary from their front yard.

What would a person say to this?

because jesus said that christians should go out into the world and spread his word to not only the jews but to the genitiles too (something about them listening better than jews, and shaking the dust off your feet...)

and as for imposed religion, i think that's a load of cow pat. also-in 1985 an act was passed in the US that allowed america to attack any nation which was imposing religion on it's citizens. well-was afghanistan and iraq not doing that? 😛 not totaly related-but hey! 😀

Also not totally related but hey II 😉 it seems like any religious argument could be equated with any sports argument. An example, which church has the most followers? which sport has the most followers? and ....which sport is the best?which religion is the truest?...perhaps evangelists would make excellent sports announcers?

I really don't think religion is about competition, if so maybe they should have a draft. The Born Agains trade RBHill for a first round pick and a conversion to be named later.

The Taliban in Afghanistan certainly was. Saddam and his fellow Baathist's were secular. Hey 50% correct, which is a pretty typical performance for Bush, in geography or any most any other subject.

Maybe because people are 'pumping' anti-religious hot air, and some people feel compelled to respond?....

Because Zealot anti-religious attacks give them the persecution that is required of all religions.

I have seen a direct relationship in the past ten years of the polorization of "believers" and "zealous non-believers".

It is weird. It is almost like the non's claim strength of their being and/or "point of view" -- which equates to "my tribe" -- by attacking religious people, never wondering at the stupidity of that argument.

I have found that people with a real strong intellectual understanding of all things religious find no joy nor need to attack religion and religious people. Those who are just "village idiot fighters" attack without mercy to defend their gangs territory.

Strange that. In the extreme.

This is perhaps true, but certainly not confined to the 'non' camp, nor to the subject of religion. I think it is a natural instinct of humans to seek protection in numbers and also a standpoint to defend/attack from.

Again, this can be said to be true of all people that have a strong intellectual understanding of life in general, not just religion. And it does flow both ways, stupidity or at least lesser understanding can cause that village idiot syndrome in both camps. Unfortunately, we fear what we do not understand and the words of Yoda ring true in many things: "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
