Evo Morales campaigns for a great leap forward. Or back, say some.

President Evo Morales, argues that the constitution will reverse centuries of discrimination. An idealistic, almost Utopian document, it defines Bolivia, wordily, as “a United Social State of Plurinational Communitarian Law”. But opponents claim that, far from deepening democracy, its application will in practice undermine it.

The text gives official recognition to “community justice” imparted by elders, and introduces the popular election of judges and members of a judicial council. These measures are intended to clean up a corrupt judiciary. Opponents say they will politicise justice, create jurisdictional conflicts and uncertainty for the police, and legitimise mob justice in the form of lynchings and stonings, which have become more common over the past two years.

Education is to become “decolonising”, “liberating” and “revolutionary”—or doctrinaire and partisan, if you prefer. The Catholic church has been angered by clauses which could be interpreted as legalising abortion and gay marriage.

looks like the revolution is coming, and its changes don't seem to be for the better...

Socialism is the politically corect form of government now days. The gospel of socialism dictates that ONLY when the world becomes dominated by socialism will there be a utopia. Socialism is the way, the truth, and the life. Anyone who desires to enter therin must come through the doors of socialism. So let it be written, so let it be done.

Edit: Such men as Castro and Chavez have shown us the way. What great guys they are and what great societies they have molded, eh? That is, at least we have not heard of any recent attempts to get to the US via life rafts from Cuba. At least we can say that!!

Socialism is far too diverse to be considered a single form of government. It's like treating all 1. e4 openings the same. In Holland alone there are six different parties in parliament incorporating different aspects of socialism.

We only have two parties in the states incorporating socialism which are the Democrats and Republicans.

Don't you concede, at the very least - even with your misgivings - that the situation now in Venezuela is better than it was in the period leading up to Chavez's election?

Perhaps but I can't say the same for the Cuban people. What I can say about the Venezuelan people is that they are far more vulnerable with the power Chavez has seized over them than before. Hopefully he will not make them sorry.

How so?

Which "Venezuelan people" are you talking about?
