They're crafted with forethought and care, and tend to be incremental in nature. Democrats recognize the value of tariffs in certain circumstances. Always have.

And then there's the Trump Reich. The tariffs thrown up by it are like Lego bricks being thrown about by a spoiled child having a temper tantrum. They are inordinately hefty, favor dictatorships like Russia and North Korea, punish our allies, exhibit no rhyme or reason as to the economic sectors they target, and appear motivated by the only thing that ever motivates a spoiled, draft-dodging rich kid: vengeance.
Tariffs can be done smart or they can be done stupid. Trump opted for the latter, because then he doesn't have to rely on experts or read a book on basic economics.
Funny you should only mention Democrats being (in your impoverished, narrow view of reality) opposed to Trump's tariffs, and ignore what the markets think. They are tanking right now, and the data is coming in that shows people are just not buying much anymore. At this point I would say we are headed for a massive recession for sure.
What's the upside of a steep recession? There are two. First, economic activity slows considerably, and so greenhouse gas emissions will be drastically reduced. We progressive should probably thank Trump for this environmental concern, and for the "self-own" he has wrought on his MAGA base who are hurting more every day. Second, it is now guaranteed that the GOP will be absolutely annihilated in 2026; or, if Trump tries to cancel the elections and impose martial law, then he has handed THE PEOPLE the ultimate weapon: a unifying foe, and the prospect of his overthrow well before 2028 by one way or another.

What Trump's doing is the exact opposite. One side proposes to put out a fire in a residential building, the other side wants to raze the whole neighborhood to prevent future fires.

Each nation Trump imposed ridiculous tariffs on must only fight a one-front war. The US, in contrast, is now going to be fighting on dozens of fronts. China and Europe, for instance, are now likely to pivot toward each other and increase trade between them. Canada also is looking to Europe. The world needs the US far, far less than the US needs the world.
