Joe Paterno was informed about it over a decade ago. Why did he keep silent and why didn't it come to light for so long if others knew? What was the motivation for keeping it hidden?

Paterno reported the incident to his superiors: the athletic director and the president or the University. There is no claim Paterno violated any law and there is no claim he did not meet his legal responsibility of reporting a claim to his superior.

It is ridiculous to expect football coaches to do their own investigation or to not believe the results of their superiors investigation. Perhaps Paterno was told the guy was investigated and the claims are unsubstantiated. Does Paterno then have to repeated every diproved rumor to the police? to the FBI too?

Despite claims to the contrary Patero does not own Penn State and there are all sorts of people on state univeristy property invited by people other than himself. Paterno is not responsible for all of their actions. He may have believed that the Penn State campus police investigated it (we don't really know because his press conference was cancelled by the Univeristy).

I am not sure why people care that the police wish to be told either. The police wish to use coerced confessions, they wish to not inform suspects of their rights. They find the constitution especially the 4th, 5th and 6th ammendments to be inconveniences.

You're being an apologist. Paterno may not have committed any crimes, but his unwillingness to report overwhelming evidence that Sandusky was a serial pedophile to the authorities was a mind boggling lapse in judgment.

Paterno should be fired immediately and should not be allowed to coach on Saturday.

To answer the OP: He probably didn't say anything because he knew that saying something would hurt the school and his own reputation and so he hoped that he could tell Sandusky to stop and sweep the past under the rug.

He did report it, but he should probably have contacted the police after nothing was done.

In any case, it baffles me how seriously Americans take college sports. As a student I would be outraged if my tuition money was used to train mindless jocks. What's next, college Starcraft, with college-funded computers?

Those "mindless jocks" (the football players, at least) bring in at least 10 times the amount of money that it costs to train them. A school like Penn State's football program is an enormous financial boon to the school and it allows the school to fund myriads of other programs (like the women's synchronized swimming team) without dipping into tuition or endowments.

Fire the GA, put the blame where it is due.

How do you know that Paterno had overwhelming evidence that Saunusky was a serial pedophile? It seemed more like he heard a story that a sexual assault may have occurred. Obviously if he knew more than a certain threshold he becomes more culpable.

The SEC did not know the Madoff did not trade for mroe than half a decade but somehow we presume Paterno knew everything that ever occured at Penn State.

These incidents were reported in various capacities to various people many times over the years in one form or another. Paterno knows everything that goes on in Happy Valley. I don't believe for a second that any of these reported incidents were unbeknownst to him. He put his own reputation and the interest of the school above the interests of abused children. Good riddance.

Madoff has nothing to do with this, so stop with the smoke screens.

Fire everyone that knew anything about this and failed to report it. Everyone.

This is ridiculous. A member of Paterno's staff came to him and told him his longtime defensive coordinator had anally raped a child in the Penn State athletic facility. And Joe only has to call the administrators? Get serious.

I mean if a kid working at McDonald's told his manager that one of the ex-employees had anally raped a child in the McDonald's bathroom and all the manager did was call the owner, people would scream and rightly so. Since when is the coach of a big time football team held to a lower standard?

It is exactly like Madoff because after the fact everyone says what happened is terrible and obvious but before the fact everyone who knew him only said positive things about him. Of course, there is no video or audio of what occured, no complaint by the victim, no letter complaining of the way they were treated on Penn State campus, no police report telling him what occurred. Paterno may be a lot of things but he does not have magical crime fighting powers and if he did not witness something, if Sandusky did not admit it to him that an incident occured or if the victim(s) did not say anything how exactly does he know what occured?

How about immediately removing the trustees who apparently hired a president and athletic director who lied to a grand jury, who had hired a coach who you feel committed a transgression so bad that he needs to be fired despite five decades of good work and who apparently had no supervision over the program? Paterno is fired because he is famous and presumably all powerful (even though he is fired and accused of no crime and unable to get a press conference to talk about a situation) while the trustees who have the real power (they hire/ fire everyone) point the finger at everyone but themselves.

Are you completely out of your mind? He was given a first hand, eyewitness account by one of his staff that Sandusky had anally raped a child in the Penn State athletic facility! It does not require "magical crime fighting abilities" to pick up his phone and call the police while the witness is right in front of him.

Paterno seemed to know much fewer details than that.

What if the rumors are false? He has to go to the police and have a report filed against a well respected person who nothing. You ruin someones career when Joe Paterno reports that you raped little boys even if you are subsequently 100% cleared. He followed the law and informed the University president and the althletic director of the problem. If they commit a crime and fail in their duty to report I am not blaming the football coacj.

The member of Paterno's staff did not report it to police either. If it was an obvious rape, wouldn't he have called the police?
