Pfizer's fourth-quarter earnings report, issued earlier Monday, illustrated the company's woes. Net income for the period rose sharply because of the $16.6 billion sale of its consumer health-care business last month, resulting in an after-tax gain of $7.9 billion.

So making "only" $7.9 billion in 3 months is an economic catastrophe who's only solution is massive layoffs??? Welcome to the New World economy.

Maybe the redundancies are to do with Pfizer's restructuring and not with how well the company's doing.
After all, they sold it's consumer health-care business for 16.6 billion. This is a one-off event, which will not be repeated next quarter. They made a profit of only 7.9 billion. So without the income resulting from the sale, the big profit suddenly turns into roughly a 9 million loss. Not that healthy.
Maybe that's why they need to restructure, and let people go.

EDIT: Try having someone read the whole article to you:
Excluding the gain from the sale of the consumer division, earnings totaled $3.05 billion, or 43 cents per share,
