In a little noticed footnote to the elction votes to fill legislative seats produced the highest number of states with one-party rule in 60 years. Democrats and Republicans now have sole control of the governorship and both legislature chambers in 31 state capitals as where democrats only control 14 state capitals. There are 12 states who share political power. Putting this into perspective, go back 16 years and the US had 31 states that shared power in their state between the two major parties. Now it is down to 12.

Over the last few days after the election, 20 states have filed a petition to secede with the White House to ask that their state withdraws from the Union so they can create their own government. Most requests come from highly conservative states but some come from progressive states like New York and Oregon.

Many petitions include a Declaration of Independence that states:

"Governments are instituded among men deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed that whatever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter it and institute a new government."

The petitions were filed through the "We the People" White House website and it promises:

"If a petition meets the signiture threshold (25,000 signitures in 30 days) it will be reviewed by the administration and we will issue a response."

Each state has "peacefully" asked to be removed from the US. Texas has already reached the 25,000 threshold and now stands at 32,000 votes.

Of course, this movement has been brewing in Texas since the mid 1990's.
