Bruce Wayne hardly "was able to lift himself up by his bootstraps"; he was born rich and being rich enables him to be Batman.
Is that true? I thought he earned it himself, at least in the comic books.

You haven't seen Batman Begins, have you?

The guy spent years in a brutal Asian prison. I'd hardly call his success a product of his birth.

Yes, but when he returned he didn't start up a hot dog stand and make his millions by building that small business into a multi-billion dollar empire - he inherited his millions.

Without those b/millions he wouldn't have the ability to R&D and build those toys that keep him from getting killed.

I saw it, but haven't committed it all to memory.

PP's post is a sufficient answer to yours.

From wiki:

In Batman's first appearance in Detective Comics #27, he is already operating as a crimefighter.[63] Batman's origin is first presented in Detective Comics #33 (November 1939), and is later fleshed out in Batman #47. As these comics state, Bruce Wayne is born to Dr. Thomas Wayne and his wife Martha, two very wealthy and charitable Gotham City socialites. Bruce is brought up in Wayne Manor, with its wealthy splendor, and leads a happy and privileged existence until the age of eight, when his parents are killed by a small-time criminal named Joe Chill while on their way home from a movie theater.

Oh, is that right? I seem to remember something about Morgan Freeman giving him the toys and were left over from some military contract or something.

Whatever.

Wasn't it Iron Man who was in an Asian prison?

Those toys and the military contract were from Wayne Enterprises ... note the name?

He took over his family's billion dollar defense company and used it to get and produce his toys.

In the movie he was held captive in Afghanistan, but I'm not sure how the origin went in the comic books.

Afghan cave that was, cannot pretend to be impressed with the lack of knowledge in this area exhibited by the Americans.

Morgan Freeman was an Employee of 'Wayne Industries' who was nostalgic for the days when Wayne senior was in charge. Bruce still had massive shareholdings in the business but no voting stock.

Ask me a question about the 'Carry On' films, go on, ask me.

Could be as well, but the scene in Batman Begins with Christian Bale beating up all the big mean scary Asian dudes was classic.
