Since coming to power in UK the Conservative government
reduced police numbers by 21,000. (Rightly or wrongly.)

Now the government is recruiting 20,000 police because
"The Conservative Party is the party of law and order,"

Wouldn't it be refreshing for someone to say
We made a mistake by getting rid of so many police and we are going to fix it.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if wolfgang could think a little more deeply than banal platitudes like:

More police = Good, Less police = bad.

I made no comment on whether more or less police were needed.

This seems to have become the standard riposte of the intellectually impoverished.

He literally said "rightly or wrongly".

I took the OP to imply that some people or parties will spin everything that happens, to be in their favor.

I never thought I'd see the day when London had more murders per year than New York City, but it does.

Last I heard, the police in England do not carry guns. Is that still true? Good lord, with all those youths carrying knives, they need something more than a club.

1. Murder rates in New York are 3 times higher than those in London. (You are referring to an isolated couple of months that got a lot of media coverage).

2. Police have a host of options to deal with gun crime (including an armed response unit).

hmmmm you appear correct but it appears 2-1, not 3-1
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/5963434/london-murder-rate-2018-city-highest-rate/
"The city (New York) recorded 147 murders between January 1 and June 30, police data shows.
During the same period London had 70 - less than half.
This means that the NYC figures are higher than London."

But as we read on, this is what I heard on radio may have been based on.

"Fifteen people were murdered in London in February, compared to 11 in New York.
The number of London murders for March also beat New York's with 23 and 21 respectively - 13 of those in the UK capital coming in just 19 days.
When the statistics are weighted for population, the rate of murders per 100,000 people was higher in London than in New York in February and March."

Also, this is telling.
"Caracas, in Venezuela, is the second most violent city in the world with 111.19 per 100,000 in the same year.
The UK’s murder rate was 0.92 per 100,000 in a 2014 UN study.
The average global homicide rate was 7.6."

Good job, you jolly ol' chaps!

Your own link says the 2017 figures differ in murder rate by a factor of almost 3.

Of course but it changed since 2017. We also know that it says 2-1 in 2018. And my point was the recent change.

Your complaint is frankly, a nothingburger response.

Also, NYC's population is higher. That has to be factored in, too, but I did not do that.
