Here you can find some other versions, including the interesting original German text (banned version) and its English translation. Originally Lili Marlene is an anti-war song and despite the censorship and thanks to the bizarre history of the song it remained an anti-war song.

Thank you, I'll look it up. I can remember many singers doing it on the radio in the 1940s.

Yea. And I ain't gunna read the rest of the responses.

Rob. You are being really, really petty. Had you bothered to study, you would have also noted that "all youths" were 'required' to join. His older brother "signed him up" so he became a "hitler" youth.

The big difference is that he "Deserted" the nazi army on fear of his life. Read all about it. In history. really. It can't hurt more than your silly initial effort to promote communism by portraying your natural enemy (anyone of god) as duplicitous.

Mike - I'm disappointed . No "chimps" ? No "snarks"? No "commies" ?

according to news reports, the pope was forced into the hitler youth and tried to escape. his parents also tried to escape nazi germany but were unable to flee as they were against the nazi ethos

Pope in the Hitler Youth

The Pope wrote about this episode in his life in "Milestones: Memoirs 1927-1977" and in his book "The Salt of the Earth".
