i believe people can change
even if he joined of his own free will in the Hitler Youth he could have been a young, impressionable kid. let's not forget that hitler fooled many into following him and it was not until the end of the WWII that became apparent to the German people that he is a sadistic evil maniac that will lead them to destruction
in short we could give him the benefit of a doubt and see how he does
also, he is doomed to mediocrity anyway(any pope following John Paul II would have lived in his shadow)
Originally posted by ZahlanziI couldn't agree more. People can and do change over a 50-year period. Even if he did join the Hitler Youth voluntarily, I'm not about to take the 78-year old Pontiff to task for something he did in his early teens.

No, of course not. I'm merely saying that a person ought not to be judged by something he did so long ago he was virtually a different person.

Is your position, then, "Once a Nazi, always a Nazi"?
Lili Marlene
Underneath the lantern,
By the barrack gate
Darling I remember
The way you used to wait
T'was there that you whispered tenderly,
That you loved me,
You'd always be,
My Lilli of the Lamplight,
My own Lilli Marlene
Time would come for roll call,
Time for us to part,
Darling I'd caress you
And press you to my heart,
And there 'neath that far-off lantern light,
I'd hold you tight ,
We'd kiss good night,
My Lilli of the Lamplight,
My own Lilli Marlene
Orders came for sailing,
Somewhere over there
All confined to barracks
was more than I could bear
I knew you were waiting in the street
I heard your feet,
But could not meet,
My Lilly of the Lamplight,
my own Lilly Marlene
Resting in our billets,
Just behind the lines
Even tho' we're parted,
Your lips are close to mine
You wait where that lantern softly gleams,
Your sweet face seems
To haunt my dreams
My Lilly of the Lamplight,
My own Lilly Marlene

Lili Marlene
Written by German soldier Hans Leip in 1915, set to music by Norbert Schultze in 1938 as The Girl under the Lantern , recorded by Lale Andersen, broadcast by German Forces Radio but was quickly banned in Germany, broadcast daily by Radio Belgrade from Yugoslavia to the Afrika Korps in 1941 when Rommel indicated he liked it, adopted by the British Eighth Army as one of the favorite songs of World War II, sung on radio by Marlene Dietrich, recorded in English by Anne Sheldon in 1944.

i believe he is not the first nazi connected pope.

Do you know just offhand if Lale Anderson recording is available. Don't do any research, I'll try looking later. I just thought you might know.

Lily Marlene
Vor der Kaserne
Vor dem großen Tor
Stand eine Laterne
Und steht sie noch davor
So woll'n wir uns da wieder seh'n
Bei der Laterne wollen wir steh'n
Wie einst Lili Marleen.
Unsere beide Schatten
Deinen zieren Gang
Alle Abend brennt sie,
Doch mich vergaß sie lang
Und sollte mir ein Leids gescheh'n
Wer wird bei der Laterne stehen
Mit dir Lili Marleen?
Aus dem stillen Raume,
Aus der Erde Grund
Hebt mich wie im Traume
Dein verliebter Mund
Wenn sich die späten Nebel drehn
Werd' ich bei der Laterne steh'n
Wie einst Lili Marleen.
