Here are my predictions:
Withen 50 years: The global community will be highly united and peaceful under a U.S banner.
Withen 100 years we will have progressed robotics to the point that capitilism will collapse in favour of a socialist type system where robots that are as flexible and ingenious as us will be our slaves. No- one will have to do mundane work anymore. The "third world" will be quickly assimilated into this system. Knowledge and wisdom will increase exponentially.
Withen 150 years we will have eradicated disease through selective breeding and 100% immunisation of new borns to every disease. All humans will be grown within a laboratory.
Withen 500 years we will have colinised every inner planet and all possible moons of the solar system (through terra-forming or large air-conditioned domes.) The human genome will have mixed to an extent that there no longer exists any individually distinguishable race.
Withen 2000 years we will have sent forth huge (a quarter the size of our moon) ships, that can travel near the speed of light. They will be A.I controlled and capable of navigating their way to new planets in new solar systems, and colinising with "human growing and maturing laboratories"
What do you think is our future?
Originally posted by NZDrifteryeah, i like that one, well except for the first one - i think conflict is inevitable until we reach a point where we are indistinguishable.

I like the idea of colonising planets - that rocks!
Originally posted by NZDrifterI have been reading sci-fi novels about those kind of scenerios for years now and things are not converging on such a future. One problem: the total shortsightedness of ALL the governments on the planet who think its ok to keep burning fossil fuels meanwhile the balance of the earth gets more and more upset, for example, the ocean current that has kept the world climate in a temperate zone for the last ten thousand years has diminished by 30 percent in the last twenty years. If and when it goes to nothing or some number that will no longer be able to keep the climate temperate then all hell will break loose, with predictions as extreme as a new ice age to almost planetwide deserts. Thats only one example. There are so many atrocities going on from an environmental viewpoint there may be no economies left to pursue all the great programs you mention. What if, for instance, the land is so altered that it can only support say, 10 percent of its present agriculture? What then of our vaulted programs?

Then there is the social equation. What about this present christian v islam war going on? you think if islam wins there will be any such programs that basically sets people free from dogma? Its hard enough in christian countries to escape suppressive dogma as it is, one example being the suppression of stem cell research in america, directly as a result of christain dogma. You heard about the muslim community in Michigan having parades with thousands of people supporting HISBOLLAH? I personally think all religions are insane but regardless of my view, such polarization can only hurt the goals of such a great future as you see. I see it also but only by a secret society that gets the hell off this planet and basically starts over somewhere else. Maybe THEY can get such an ideal future going. I can see that happening, the money coming from dudes like Paul Allen and his private spacecraft inititive could end up independently setting up colonies on the moon or mars and building from there in spite of the earth going down the tubes.

Originally posted by sonhouseI see your points, but I think we will gradually overcome these problems. Once robotics reaches a point where we can rely on this tecnology to completly support us; I believe it will be the greatest revolution and ultimatly our saviour.

Like you basically stated - There will be difficulties getting through the current period of turmoil. But I have great faith in the fundamental goodness and adaptibility of human beings to see us through. Just look at what *saint* Bill Gates is doing at the moment.
Originally posted by sonhouseYou know, one thing about the US space program, its being tied to political forces. Nixon killed the apollo program basically because he saw we already beat the russians to the moon so he viewed it as an expensive publicity stunt and damned if he was going to support a stupid democratic party inititive so it got axed and now we can't even find the PLANS to the apollo, they are all gone and so we basically have to start over for a NASA sponsered moon program, oh, and its 40 years behind schedule now. Gee, wonder how it would be now if the apollo program had been viewed by the shortsighted government not as a stunt but a beginning?

But seriously, NZD, according to Delmer's Infinite Loop Theory of History, our future will be the same as our past.

What I wonder is suppose the human race fails miserably and offs itself. How many millions of years will go by before intelligence raises its ugly head again?
How's this for a scenerio: a time machine is invented, #1 maurader and Kellyjay gets to go on the time machine say 10 million years in the future and find that humans are so long gone even the great wall of china is buried a half mile deep and there is intelligent life back on earth but they are intelligent cockroaches.. #1 is delighted, tries to refom christianity, kellyj is intent on making new bibles to convert all the new heathen. One thing, the roaches won't have to be convinced they didn't come from monkeys.......
