"A BBC investigation estimates that around $23bn (£11.75bn) may have been lost, stolen or just not properly accounted for in Iraq.

For the first time, the extent to which some private contractors have profited from the conflict and rebuilding has been researched by the BBC's Panorama using US and Iraqi government sources.

A US gagging order is preventing discussion of the allegations. "

Anybody surprised that Bush is aiding thieves and conmen and is largely to blame for the ongoing bloodshed in Iraq?

I just don't know why the Dems allow Bush to get away with this crap. Maybe they want the situation to get worse so they can win the election? NAH!

Actually, its the only way they win elections. They know that no one will vote for them for their ideas, rather, their only hope is to appeal to people to vote for "change". Therefore, all they can do is hope that things are bad enough out their for people to desire "change".

Basically, because the Republicans screw things up so much every time, Change for Dems is a no-brainer, kinda like abortion for Republicans (or taxes, or guns, or chants of U.S.A! U.S.A.!).

They don't really have to hope for anything if previous econoic history is anything to go by. After 12 years of Republicanism previously the economy was sufficiently stuffed for people to demand a change and the got it in the shape of bubba. Now after 8 years of looting and pillaging of the public purse in terms of shameful corporate welfare and belligerent forign policy to help boost the coffers of the military industrial complex, the Dems dont have to hope for anything other than maybe people wont be sucked in to enduring 4 more years of the same, 'money for the boys' 'funds relocation plan' that seems to be stock in trade of the neo con movement.

You would think once bitten twice shy, but maybe its not that the 'people' haven't exercised good judgment in the matter anyway, the sad truth may simply be that the corporations have now effectively silenced the people's voice.

Surprised? No.

War is the most horribly unproductive, wasteful activity known to man. You've pointed out another reason why that's true -- war profiteers, who always flock to any conflict knowing that the "usual oversight" of contracts will break down in the general clamour.

Yet another reason to avoid war whenever possible.
