I don't know if this is a Debates topic or Spirituality, but I think it's Debates.
I talked to a guy a little while ago who claimed the Earth went through periodic catastrophes having something to do with the axis angle shifting and the location of the solar system going into the center of the Milky Way. He claims it happens every 26800 years (I think that was the number) and he says it's predicted in several places:
1) Some search engine called Webbot searches for stock quotes among all the crap on the internet, but can only search up to 2012. I don't understand what he meant by that though.
2) Nostradamus predicted something or other in 2012.
3) Some sort of Chinese fortune telling coins with lines on them can predict the future, but only to 2012.
4) The Mayan calendar ends in 2012.
What is this guy talking about? Anyone think there's some merit to all this? I see him regularly, so I want to be able to discuss the topic with him even though he sounds like a nut.
Originally posted by AThousandYoungWell, the axis of the earth shifting does happen periodically, but it's utterly unpredictable and definitely doesn't follow a set period as suggested. The sun does not go into the centre of the Milky way, it orbits its centre at a pretty constant radius, but that wouldn't affect earth too greatly.

The Webbot I've never heard of and tend to avoid anything ont he internet suggesting anything about the stock markets, let alone armageddon.
Never read Nostradamus in detail, but he has a reputation for vagueness and lots of stuff going down around 2000, I wouldn't go remortgage my house and go on a spending spree based on his word.
I dunno anything about the chinese coins.
The mayan calender was based on a series of cogs set within eachother which represented everything from their smallest units of time up to eras. The outermost cog represents the era. One full revolution is one full era. We get to the end of the outer cog in 2012, thus a new era will begin, the mayan clock doesn't stop, though I think the mayans said something about the world as we know it ending at that time.
Basically it's the mayan equivalent of the millenium bug.
He is a nut, but nuts are handy, keep a note of his ideas and write a book without referencing him, you'll make at least a few bob. If he calls you on it, everyone will believe you when you say he's a conspiracy theorist. Worked for Dan Brown!
Originally posted by AThousandYoungI only know of the Mayan Calender on, the mayans devoted thier being to the stars and alignment of planets and were very good at perdicting eclipses and meteror shower and other sstuff and they had a very complicated calender that would repeat its self every couple thousand years or so and each of I think it's six of these groups of years spells out a significant corilation to whats to come for those years untill the new cycle. Some represent famine or times when their people would flurish (they say the one cycle of famine started around the time of the great depression and some other coincedental occurances like that which to some might give it some merit. And at the last cycle marks the "end of days" and we all die or some thing like that I think by our calender its supposed to be like may 10 2012 or december something like that. I'm sure I'm off on some of this stuff I just remember it from some classes I had. But it should give you some sort of background to work with.

But I wouldn't give them to much merit heck this was a civilization that couldn't even invent lights, cars, or internet porn.

Originally posted by whodeyNo, I'm not. If you'll notice from my Daniel thread however I am willing to analyze such prophecies so as to prove their falseness if someone brings them up.
Now don't tell me you are worring about prophecies. I thought you thought prophecy was for ๐ people?
And you never know what the Mayans figured out. Maybe there's going to be some sort of cool astronomical event.
