"Russian President Vladimir Putin has said a recent ballistic missile test was in answer to US plans to create a defence shield in Central Europe.
Mr Putin said it was a "response to maintain the strategic balance in the world", in what he called a "new round of the arms race".

Putin is no moron. He knows the intercetors aren't intended for Russian missiles and that MAD still applies. Ten interceptors obviously are irrelevant in the face of 8,000+ ICBMS. He knows full well that they're intended for missiles from nations with much smaller arsenals and he's just using this as an excuse to increase military spending.

Besides all that, could we really expect a forner cageybee guy to be over the Cold War?

The American people should ridicule him for trying to relive the Cold War. Much like a former hippie out protesting for old times sake. And much like that hippie, his old head of hair is gone now too.

I personally think that the US is overreacting. Just because they are developing new missile technology doesn't mean that these missiles are directed at us.

I was just wondering where she came up with this or is there something I am missing. The link was from the UK bbc was it not. If so where is she getting at with America is over reacting? Or is she just spouting out?

How the hell am I spouting out? The people developing the new missiles are OBVIOUSLY Russia. America is OBVIOUSLY the country setting up the anti missile system.

The BBC was reporting about America, so I am OBVIOUSLY talking about how America is overreacting, not the BBC.

How much more obvious could it get?

I'm confused about the overreaction part too. Best as I can tell, the U.S. reaction to Putins blather has been nothing other than to repeat that SDI is not intended for Russian missiles.

Besides all that, does nobody think that maybe, just possibly, that DoD has already given consideration to potential countermeasures.

Also, from what I can tell, this missile simply has multiple re-entry vehicles. Gee, I wish we had thought of that. Decades ago. Oh, nevermind.

Multiple, independently targetable reentry vehicles. I'm quacking in my boots, Pooty-poot.

From what I understand, the US is interpreting the move as a tactical anti-US maneuver.

Of course it is, in a way. But what leads you to believe that the U.S. is overreacting?

Didn't mean to set you off. Wouldn't you say that indeed it is the Russians that are over reacting not the Americans. How is the US setting up a minor defense system over reacting. And over reacting to what? Or are we ating, sounds like it. To me the Russians are overreacting with saying OK we are going to make more Long Range Ballistic Missles.

Seems reasonable to me.

Americans/British develop new defenses to defeat existing Russian technology. Russians need to keep selling their stuff, or else they lose money, and so, they need to develop new missile systems that are capable of bypassing the new technology.

What's the big deal? Been going on for decades, not like any of this comes as a surprise.

Who else are the Russians going to sell their weapons to? The Americans?

If the stuff works like anything else russian we've seen there's nothing to worry about. If they launched it probably would go the wrong direction.
