Red Southern states now face the ugly truth they are fast losing economic ground to blue northern states, due to fewer educated workers, too much dependence on agriculture, and blue collar jobs, as the information age concentrates the bulk of it's wealth in areas of America with a better educated, and tech savvy employees and entrepreneurs.

The American South spent much of the past century trying to overcome its position as the country’s poorest and least-developed region, with considerable success: By the 2009 recession it had nearly caught up economically with its northern and western neighbors.

That trend has now reversed. Since 2009, the South’s convergence has turned to divergence, as the region recorded the country’s slowest growth in output and wages, the lowest labor-force participation rate and the highest unemployment rate.

The policies that drove the region’s catch-up—low taxes and low wages that attracted factories and blue-collar jobs—have proven inadequate in an expanding economy where the forces of globalization favor cities with concentrations of capital and educated workers.

There is something in this analysis that makes me think that the South has not gotten over its reliance on the ‘peculiar institution’ of enslavement as its primary source of wealth. The North, by comparison (while like the South, invested in that institution) was able to thrive through the labor-saving efficiencies of the subsequent industrial revolution.

I see globalization as a way to outsource labor to countries whose labor and environmental laws make US labor uncompetitive. This is in part a corporate, capitalist reaction to, and enabler of, the ills you refer to.

The South has no monopoly of those ills. There are pockets of generational poverty elsewhere in the US. I’d also add to your list the exploitation of these people by opioid manufacturers. Who also rely on outsourcing of the manufacture of these drugs.

The report refers to the South as Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky. Do you have data showing these states to be “flooded” with illegals relative to other states?

The articles points out measures of and reasons for the recent problems. They are generally nonpartisan.

I know you don't want me to call you a liar again ...
So what about backing that up?

Show how the South has been flooded with illegal aliens,
and
that it is the reason behind those states poor performance.

Thanks.
