This is a very interesting article. Apparently there are a sizable group of rich Germans who think the government should raise taxes on the wealthy. According to Dieter Lehmkuhl, there are 2.2 million Germans with a fortune of over 500,000 euros. A wealth tax of 5% for two years could raise 100 billion euros to fight unemployment, poverty and social inequality.

Does this warrant a renewed faith in mankind?

According to the article:

"The petition has 44 signatories so far, and will be presented to newly re-elected Chancellor Angela Merkel."

Wow. 44? No kidding.

"The group say they have more money than they need"

Okay. Donate it.

"Simply donating money to deal with the problems is not enough, they want a change in the whole approach."

Oh, I see. They want to spend other people's money.

"Those who had 'made a fortune through inheritance, hard work, hard-working, successful entrepreneurship, or investment' should contribute by paying more to alleviate the crisis."

So they should be penalized for doing good things (with the exception of inheritance)?

"If they all paid the tax for two years, Germany could raise 100bn euros to fund ecological programmes, education and social projects . . ."

It could. Or you could discourage people from saving, investing, and "hard work." A lot of it would certainly be wasted.

It's going to be very hard to convince me that a direct wealth tax is a good thing, even temporarily. If you're going to raise taxes, I'd advocate taxing any combination of a lot of other sources (e.g., labor income, capital income, excise/sales taxes, business taxes) before going to a wealth tax.

"The group held a demonstration in Berlin on Wednesday to draw attention to their plans, throwing fake banknotes into the air.
Mr Vollmer said it was 'really strange that so few people came'."

Really?

I reject that. Rightwingers have no exclusive claim to good economic sense.

Yes they do! No right of center govt has ever squandered money at the rate Obama has. Tax and spend, spend and tax some more. That's the leftist way. Once you bankrupt the country then print more money and start the process anew!

Bush was no conservative. He was a Republican. Never the same! Look at Olympia Snow! That's the Bush brand of Republican. This massive govt spending was started by Bush, after all! No true connservative would spend like a drunken sailor and give in to leftist ideologues the way Bush did! They are just Dem light or Republicrats. How Olympia Snow thinks that voting to tax us into bankruptcy is OK is way over the top. Rwingett lauds that a bunch of rich loons who demand being taxed even more restores his faith in humanity is more evidence of moonbattery at its best. Govt cannot even get enough vaccine for swine flu but we're supposed to bend over and give them more money to squander. What did we get out of the stimulus, for example? Unemployment of 10%, 33K jobs, pork for those who fall in lock step with Obamamania and more czars to help you bend over further while they push the massive genitalia of govt farther up our collective asses! Ah, bbut this is never enough. Then they try and tell the press what is and isn't a news organization and not to cover stories of that other network! Obama is Chavez light! Now they also want to tax wheelchairs, dentures, and all other sorts of replacement devices like hips and knees! The only thing they don't want to tax is sex because then it would cost them money to f... us over! Heaven help us all!

Taxing the rich heavily makes perfect economic sense, why would you think otherwise?

Merkel's plans to reduce taxes are a severe mistake that will hurt the recovery of the economy.

As usual more deluded leftist BS. Everywhere there's high taxes this leads to economic depression. Look at California in the US. Bankrupt! High taxes have caused flight of business to more tax friendly states. Raising taxes leads to lower revenues for any govt. That's a fact! Cannot be changed. Tried everywhere and the results are the same. Higher taxes causes hesitation in investment. Again, raise taxes for what? To squander on what? More crazy social programs that lead to more failure? Go ahead. Push for raising taxes. Never ends with the rich. They then increase the price of goods so we the poor pay anyway. Less investment, less jobs. Govt cupidity gets used to getting more money for nothing then squanders it on consolidating power first, people way last!

Not true. Australia is one of the highest taxed countries in the world and has arguably weathered the recession better than any other country.

California does not have high taxes and most high tax countries are not in a depression. Who exactly is deluded here? California is one of the richest US states, but suffers from an ineffective government because its constitution is crap. The debts are mostly caused by the fact that the upper middle class pays too little taxes.
