@contenchess saidThere is no such thing as an illegal gun in the US. There are just guns, shed loads of them without any meaningful controls and that’s why they fall into the hands of criminals.
@wildgrass
So criminals can carry and legal gun owners have to jump through hoops just to carry?
Obviously you have never lived in a major city. 🙄
Why don't you focus on illegal gun crime instead?
Oh that's right....your peeps are the criminals 🙄
At some point legally owned guns are getting into the hands of criminals, why do you suppose that’s happening?
@averagejoe1 saidCome back to reality, Joe.
First, as to RHouse, if you say 'why was he there, ' I say, 'why were the other guys there?" Rittenhouse was totally legal, and the videos tell the rest of the story. The Jury saw it all, while we were all playing frisbee,,,,we didn't see all the evidence. The jury, after seeing and hearing, found Rittenhouse totally innocent of the charges. I cannot imagining debatin ...[text shortened]... ely agree on that one first factor, how would this discussion go from here??
Good post, Wildgrass
@shavixmir saidA gun does make you safe(r). But to be doubly safe, use common sense. When you have to think 🤔 whether or not to be somewhere, dont go. If you see a hoodie coming your way, cross the street. Ive never been in a street myself, but i would in that case!
I’ve lived in several major cities and in conflict areas at that.
I’ve travelled the D-train (I think it was the D-train: from Manhatten up to Harlem, anyways) late in the evening. I’ve stumbled through the impoverished areas of Mumbai and Cairo…
Never once have I been attacked, robbed or threatened.
Excluding Ben Gurion airport security. Well, and Mumbai airport sec ...[text shortened]... humor, I tells ya!
I think your attitude is the problem, if you think you need a gun to be safe.

@dood111 saidNo that’s people in illegal possession of guns. The reason that so many are in the possession of criminals is because the market place is swamped with legally sold weapons with no meaningful controls regarding them.
Yes, there is:
https://gun.laws.com/illegal-guns/illegal-weapons
If gun owners were required to prove that they still have their guns or the details of who does have them, better yet make direct citizen to citizen transfer or sale of weapons illegal you might keep some of these deadly weapons out of the wrong hands.
@kevcvs57 saidYou are playing word games and you obviously didn't read or understand the article.
No that’s people in illegal possession of guns.
There are tons of guns that are illegal to own.
I can't take some of my guns to California because they are illegal to possess in that state.
If you cut the barrel of a shotgun or rifle to below the minimum required by federal law, they become illegal.
If you modify an autoloader to fire full automatic, it becomes illegal.
If you have a pistol with more than a 10 round capacity, it is illegal in several states.
Many other examples.
@wildgrass saidI don't think self-defense laws need to change. In fact, I think they're a bit harsh (though I won't derail the thread by going into that).
Self-defense laws have visceral roots. We should be able to protect ourselves and our loved ones. And self defense laws are important checks on criminal prosecution. Here's self defense in legalese:
"A defendant's use of deadly force in self-defense is justified if a reasonable ground existed under the circumstances for the defendant's belief that he or she was threaten ...[text shortened]... ikely rise. Many of them won't be on videotape. Is it time to change the definition of self defense?
I tend to agree, though, that there should be more restrictions and/or training requirements to carry guns in public. I would support a law making it a Misdemeanor to intentionally carry a firearm into a crowded area except for certain specified purposes or except for where the person has some sort of special permit that requires significant training. The details would be complex, but the idea is fine.
I don't think the Arbery case would be relevant though, as McMichael didn't carry a gun into a crowded place by any definition. McMichael was guilty because he chased down Arbery for no good reason and Arbery ended up dead, not because he misused his gun at the moment of the shooting.
@kevcvs57 saidYou really don't have the first clue as to what you're talking about.
There is no such thing as an illegal gun in the US. There are just guns, shed loads of them without any meaningful controls and that’s why they fall into the hands of criminals.
There are thousands of restrictions and regulations on the possession and carry of guns.
@sh76 saidI bet kevc is going to double down and say something like: "Nooo, the guns aren't illegal, possessing them is illegal derp de derhhhh"
You really don't have the first clue as to what you're talking about.

@dood111 saidNo you are playing word games and deflecting rather than admit that the only reason there are so many guns in the hands of criminals is the total lack of gun control per se. No gun should ever be lost to the system without law enforcement being made aware. There should be consequences for not being able to produce a legally owned gun or a paper trail regarding its new owner. The BS claim that criminals get anything but a small minority of their guns via theft is just that BS.
