Israel's prime minister has welcomed a pledge by Palestinian militants to continue to observe a conditional halt in attacks until the end of the year.
"The arrangement reached in Cairo is a positive first step," Ariel Sharon told Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak by phone a statement by his office said.

It was announced at a meeting of 13 Palestinian factions meeting in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

A spokesman of the militant group Hamas said the truce would expire at the end of 2005 if Israel did not meet their demands.

In his statement, Mr Sharon warned Mr Mubarak: "If we want to progress in the peace process, the problem of the terrorist groups must be solved."

24 illegal settlements have been founded since Ariel Sharon became prime minister in March 2001 and 105 illegal outposts had been set up by settlers with the collusion of government ministries in the past decade. When you are busy stealing his land, of course you want your neighbour to remain quiet.

Then why do you think the Palestinian factions agreed on having a truce ?

A chance to negotiate and a respite to prepare their forces for the next round. Or do you think peace has begun in the Middle East?

That depends on a lot of factors.

The developments in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Israel, Palestinian territory and lets not forget how the superpowers want to promote their own national interests in these countries.

AN IMPORTANT PERSON:
in the eye of an historian:

... someone who did something important.
in the eye of an opportunist:
... someone who is doing something important.
in the eye of an optimist:
... someone who will do something important.
