I know of a small resort community, people want to come there, to rent STRs. Their presence creates problems for the residents there. So, the discussions have made it to the Town Board, to somehow reach a resolution for both sides.
So, a Letter to the Editor has this line in it: (the writer favors having STRs)
"Short-Term Rentals increase the supply and variety of tourist accommodation, making travel more affordable, especially for families and groups for whom purchasing multiple hotel rooms can be costly."
I'm sorry? Is he suggesting that the Town subsidize vacationers so that they can have a nice weekend, at the expense of the neighborhood?? I don't give a whit about their having a good time, at affordable prices. The town is what it is, they should pick a cheaper town.
Ahhhh, this is AvJoe in the rough!!!! Natural Law will be their only recourse!! Seriously, is this guy the ultimate whiney liberal???? ooooo, it could be costly, we need to welcome these 12 people that will crash in this 4-BR house for 3 nights.
WAIT!!!! Maybe he is an entrepreneur with rental properties.....so he has quite the vested interest in getting STRs approved. He could be a successful conservative!!!!!!! He prob hates his own rental property, given that he has to clean it all up when they are gone. Ugghh.
Now I am torn!! Y'all will trap AvJoe on his own thread.........
😕
The council doesn’t subsardize anything.
Renting a room / cottage etc. for a week is generally cheaper than booking a hotel room for a week (think air BnB).
So, for many families, it’s a good holiday option.
However, in various neighbourhoods, it leads to constant change and frustration (like in Amsterdam).
That’s the debate here. Nothing about government paying for anything.
@AverageJoe1 saidI don’t see anything in the statement which gives the inference you are seeing.

@divegeester saidThat’s what I said… but you said it shorter and more to the point.

I can only presume that’s through old age.

@divegeester saidThe guy is saying that it is more important to make it easy for people to swarm into town and party for 3 days, and leave, than to improve the quality of life in the town.

I'll take it a step further. The owner of the house (landlord) may say that the reason he bought the house was to make it a business, to rent it out to make money. So, he expects the council to help him do that, (subsidize). and in effect help the people who are looking for a place to rent when the neighbors are negatively affected by his rental business, and by the partying next door..
I do not care about his rental business. I don't want his house next door to me. It is a residential neighborhood. If this happens, it will no longer be.
The guy who wrote the letter to the editor has his piorities screwed up. He thinks that the town council should not regulate property use, and allow for an upheaval of property restrictions. It don't get more liberal than that. The town has an obligation to citizens, not to college kids looking for a good time.
Should the rights of the citizens be cast aside? Would you not be forced to move if this happened next door to you?
@AverageJoe1 saidAs I said I don’t see anything of what you say in the comment by you local councillor.

I don't see anyone in that town complaining about the flood of tourist $$ flowing into the coffers of the town's restaurants, hotels, service stations, convenience stores or other local merchants.
For someone who claims to be "pro business" your sniveling rings a bit hollow. 😏
@AverageJoe1 saidThe woman across the street and katty corner from me lets her house out as an airBnB. I keep an eye out on the comings and goings, but I'm not a sniveling snowflake like you. She's probably raking in money hand over fist. So what? Maybe I'll end up doing the same, who knows.

@AverageJoe1 saidDid you really say that it is a liberal idea not to have the government interfere with private property use?

@AThousandYoung saidNo, my post is limited to a person who, by a Letter to Editor, is suggesting to council (govt) and townspeople that they make it as comfortable and cheap as possible, lessening any subdivision provisions, for people to treat their beautiful town disrespectfully for 3 days, and leaving their remnants behind for the town to clean up while disrupting the daily lives of homeowners. His suggestion implies that the town and homeowners accommodate these people with no reservation.
Did you really say that it is a liberal idea not to have the government interfere with private property use?
Govt certainly should control private property use, over and above subdivision and lesser restrictions.
@Suzianne saidBut, you DO keep an eye out……….for what?

@AverageJoe1
Man, how DARE he attract people to that town where they will no doubt eat at a local cafe and maybe buy some tourist stuff BESIDES the rent money coming into that own. Guy should be fuuking HUNG.
Jebesus, one day you bitch about a girl getting attacked by cops for daring to have a lemonade stand and now you bitch about people actually making money they would not have had if those tourists didn't show.
Make up your fuuking mind.
@sonhouse saidTry this issue, though?

You invite the businesses to do exactly what should not happen. Implore homeowners to disrupt the town, turn their homes, in residential subdivisions, into businesses, to invite people who will buy hot dogs but not contribute to the performing arts or to Children’s Illiteracy or churches or 501-c3 concerns. Citizens will move away from this lot, leaving no true citizenry, those who support the town.
