In the past, she has been invited to speak and told to sit down and shut up - without the marae elders intervening. That reduced her to tears.
Last year, it was the bash, with a crowd of people abusing her and jostling. Other visitors have been spat upon and pelted with mud. Year after year, the same farce.
So why go to a place that treats her and her office without respect?

Helen is Helen Clark the primeminister of New Zealand.
Coming up is Waitangi day, the commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 (I think it was 1840).
There has been much controversy over the Treaty thanks to some differing opinions on what it entitles Maori to and the way grievances are handled.
Waitangi the place is where the major ceremony happen on Waitangi day (strangely enough). In the past primeministers with policies away from what Maori want have been badly treated (heckled, mud, spat on etc.).
And there we are in a nutshell.

Thanks for the explanation. I don't know anything about it, but what do you think would happen if she didn't go? Would she be accused of ignoring/snubbing the maori i.e. damned if she does, damned if she doesn't?

I say Blair, Berlesconi or The Dutch Prime-minister...whatever the hell his name is... should be pelted with crap anywhere and everywhere they show their ugly bloody heads!

...other Maori are peeved about the health stats (why are Maori dying 8- 10 years (on av.) before their Pakeha countrymen?), crime stats (did you know that 'white' collar crime is costing our country 100x more than the 'Maori' crime - so why the focus on 'Maori' crime?) the education stats, the law processes....
what would you do? go terrorist....or signal your discontent with the odd t-shirt throwing, mud slinging or verbal tirade? Maori have chosen the very tame 2nd option - think yourself lucky your dealing with patient, and in many cases forgiving Maori people! 😉

As usual you are focusing on the victims(Maori) in a minimalistic way, not the perpetrators of the murder and unlawful acts.
lets dabate the social inequalities in NZ, or are they 'natural'?

We did we bother if the hundreds of millions paid out makes no difference?

I can discuss where I live, and the things which are unfair and need fixing in my own country.
Or I can criticise other countries from half the world away.
Which do you prefer me to do?
