I feel that it is wrong and that they are twisting it to their means. I think oif charles wants to marry camilla he should abdicate.

What I don't get is why isn't there a mass revolution by the citizens of England to throw this supposed "royality" (Charles, the boys, the Queen, etc) out on the street and to use all of that wasted money to keep them living in the lap of luxury for any other much more worthwhile purpose?

I mean what does the Queen do in any political sense now? What is her contribution to society accept for spending money that is not hers? I would be pissed if I was a citizen.

I agree with you totally. It tends to be the older generations who still appreciate the monarchy. Also britain is a very patriotic country and people see it as a british tradition. And finally the government who have the power to kick them out will do nothing as they would lose the support of a number of supporters.

I myself couldnt care less about the royal family.

I couldn't care less what they do, the sooner I never have to hear about the royal family again the better.

I think it's less patriotism and more 'stuck in their ways'. My dad is the perfect example of this sort of thinking, refuses to use metric measurements, wants to keep the pound just because the Euro is 'foriegn'.

She still signs bills to become law. Technically she can refuse but I don't think that has ever happened.

I read somewhere that another European country (I think Netherlands, been trying to find it online) that the monarch was temporarily removed from power because he/she did not like something in particular. They just did it anyway without his/her consent. 🙂

I agree that the Queen (and the rest of the family) should have their royal status removed though. They are all one big embarrassment. The only thing that is interesting about them is their history, when they really did have power to make decisions for the country.

The government (any government) doesn't have the power to kick them out.
Actually, its the reverse - rich lizzie has the power to kick out the government.

Actually, found that it has happened. Queen Anne has refused back in 1707.

My question is why he left Diana for her. She must be able to suck a golf ball through a garden hose.😉

Does she really have that much power? I thought she was just some window dressing figurehead.

Why not? They've made a mockery of the Royal Family as is, why not let them hump each other's brains out like two geriatric rabbits...

On paper she has that much power, yes.
In reality, if she tried to use it she'd be removed pretty sharpish, or at least lose her "on paper" powers.

As for the marriage - who cares? And indeed why not?
The people who seem to be really opposed to it are rabid Diana-philes who seem to forget that Charlie and Di actually divorced before she shagged her way around the world then died.

Yes, she has the power to dissolve parliament, and to refuse to sign off legislation. The fact that they haven't done this for a while doesn't alter the fact that they can.
If a governement was to try to abolish the monarchy, they'd need the monarch's assent to do this.
