Do you suppose it would be different if Scotland were a good team (they used to be) and the Scottish press hyped them out of orbit?
We're not so different.
But I don't think many supporters actually believed this.
In the various tournamnents where Scotland qualified and England didn't (which used to be the norm), the British meeja didn't have the same hype about the Scottish team.
And I think that is the key difference - I don't care what the English media do in England, but we get it all here too, and it is very irritating.
If the Scottish media were hyping up a Scotland team, we wouldn't subject England to it. But we're subjected to it from a British media.
Originally posted by rmackenOf course they shouldn't support England - the rivalries are good natured but definately heart felt. On a club level I'm an Arsenal fan but of course when it comes to Champions league you follow the English club. In 99 (I think) I was chearing on Man U in the final. They were a goal down (a shame as they played well)... Then in the last seconds they scored twice....
Every reply was "I will be supporting the other team England is playing!"
I was gutted - much as I tried to pretend, in my heart I wanted them to lose. You cant want a team to lose all season (to give your team the chance to win the title) and then suddenly love them.
Scottish fans have a great rivalry with the English - particularly in rugby.... Remember this season when they won the calcutta cup - To suddenly change that attitude and WANT England to win (even in a football shirt) would be dishonest.
Why should they want us to have the bragging rights for another 40 years!!!
Come on Jamaica

For me though, I'll carry on supporting the home nations where appropriate.
I remember for a couple of Six Nations Tournaments, when England did that scandalous deal with Sky, I supported Scotland as my first team 🙂
Didn't do too well I'm afraid. Lookng much better now though.

in the world cup??
I saw an interview with a variety of members of the public asking if they would be supporting England in the world cup as they are our neighbours. Every reply was "I will be supporting the other team England is playing!"
Is this going back to the days of Robert the Bruce and the battles/ heritage etc?
Or are Scots just sour grapes??
For me, it is a no-brainer.
I will always support any home nation in international events and national teams too. When Scottish, Welsh or Irish teams are competing, I always want then to do well. No Question.
The only exception is when playing England, then my loyalties lie with my home country. Supporting the team playing against Scotland just because it is Scotland is wrong - this is something that should be reserved for Germany and Argentina 😀
Originally posted by horseyI disagree with you in this one. This statement should also ring true for those players who play for rival clubs who then also play for England. How can you be baying for Lampard's blood one week in a club match and then be cheering him on to score a goal for England?

For me it is quite simple, any English club vs any foreign club = I support the English club to win. Blood is thicker than water! And this rings true for Home countries too - and in most respects Europe against South America.
I suppose it depends how far you take your club support - would you support France over England if they had more Arsenal players on the field?

I'm trying to see it from the scots point of view. My experience is mostly of rugby where we are to Scotland what Germany and Argentina are to us in football. The main hope of most scottish rugby fans (and Welsh) is to beat England. The rivalry is huge (not so much the other way as we hate the French) When the Scots watch England play rugby they would always support the opposition. Its like my irrational hatred of Man U. Probably comes mainly from respect but I wouldn't want to say that too often.
For me I find Man U fans a bit arrogant so I hate it when they win trophies as it gives them more reason to gloat. I don't mind so much if Arsenal lose so long as someone else (It can even be chelsea) beat Man U.
Back to the point.
I think the English have become very arrogant about rugby - particularly to the Scottish and Welsh so they now (they probably always have but its obvious why now) hate to see us win and crow even more. They up their game just to beat us and its like their cup final.
I think the same has now become true of English football in the scots eyes. They will support the opposition as they feel we have become to arrogant (despite many years of underperformance in my opinion)
So I'm not saying I agree with it and I'd love to cheer on the Scots as I think they are a proud and great nation. I can just see where they're coming from.
Originally posted by horseyI believe you, but I don't think we would find many scottish people who would reciprocate. I always hear disgruntled (and proably jealous) scottish supporters sounding off their support of any team who play England.
I know what your saying - In fact if England were not in the world cup and scotland were I'd support them all the way.
It is such a shame that all of Great Britain can't get behind the only nation in the running - I would for any of them, whether England were in it or not. If you're talking about rugby, then I think that the is less diversity. Scotland and Wales are much better at rugby that they are at football - so I would expect rivalry to be more intense.
