Astronauts on Discovery have carried out the mission's first spacewalk during which they carried out tests on repair kits for the orbiter.
Soichi Noguchi and Steve Robinson are now back in the shuttle airlock and undergoing repressurisation after a walk lasting over 6 hours.
Meanwhile US space agency Nasa is continuing its analysis of images taken to inspect for damage sustained during launch, when foam debris fell around the shuttle.
Discovery is due to touch down at Kennedy Space Center on 7 August at 0546 EDT (0946 GMT; 1046 BST).
-Are you concerned about the 'debris' that fell from the shuttle?
-What do you think of the changes to the space shuttle?
-What impact will the mission have on the US space programme?

Nasa has saved hundreds of thousand of lives, dont give up on them so soon,
I would love to see Private space missions, Instead of Goverment.

Kirksey for Prez!

I didn't realise they'd changed anything about the space shuttle. However, I do think they need to start using better glue. It seems to me they're saving expenses on the wrong things over there. Perhaps one coffee machine less or something would be more appropriate.
The impact on the space programme will have everything to do with which goals it has (like a Star Wars defence system or something) and less to do with a couple of exploding space ships.
EDIT: It's wings??? It's wings??? Bed time!

But isn't Antartica a lot closer. And nearly as cold.
Sincerely, I believe that people will inevitably live on Mars: first in immense sealed canyons, then (a few centuries down the line) in a terraformed environment. Genetic adaptation will take place: human beings will be divided into Terrans and Martians. Nor will Mars be the only body in the solar system that human beings will colonize.
If you're at all interested in Mars (California & Antarctica, too), you should read Kim Stanley Robinson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Trilogy) . You'll be assured of an excellent read at the very least.
As a preliminary to space emigration, of course, I'd like to see peace on Earth. I don't think it need be a prerequisite, though.
I think allowing free enterprise would be better then the current system.
Also if we can find a way to harness energy from materials gathered in the space like in the asteroid belt for example we could mine there, and cause less damage to our own enviorment searching for energy resources.
edit: Almost forgot, I am a little worried about the shuttle yes.

end up like those two shuttles? they can't even manage their own
area of supposed expertise, why do you think they would do any
better at energy? There needs to be a HUGE national program
I mean a hundred billion or more, they sure found the money when
they wanted to attack Iraq but they dropped out of ITIR, the only
fusion game in town worth a crap, so now the french, germans and
japanese are going to decide the future of energy. What kind of
sense is that. Well of course with Bushbrain in office, you get stuff like
when the oil companies are making record profits, the price of gas is
doubled, congress just passes a 14 BILLION dollar pig grant to the
oil companies, so you can see what happens to the idea of a big
fusion program.
