Thanks @DeepThought. The TOR missile is also identified by NATO as a S-15.
Here is a snip from a yahoo article:
"The plane, which was initially headed west to leave the airport zone, turned right following a problem and was headed back to the airport at the moment of the crash," the Iranian Civil Aviation Organisation said on its website late Wednesday.
"The plane disappeared from radar screens the moment it reached 8,000 feet (2,400 metres). The pilot sent no radio message about the unusual circumstances.
Ok, two things: I still remain highly suspicious of this no radio message from the pilot. The B737 has many radios as backup, one is independent of any electrical bus and is battery powered. The craft also had an extra Captain pilot on board. Also, for a craft to turn off its flight path and come back to the airport could be putting said craft on the path with a craft right behind and a collision of the two could occur. It is highly unlikely that such a maneuver would be actuated *without ATC approval*. Again, highly unlikely, not impossible.
the plane disappearing from radar at 8,000 feet. Highly improbable.
Most civilian ATCs/airports are going over to using secondary radar only which picks up signals sent from the craft. The transponder could have been destroyed but the military could still see the craft using primary radar, which is what all militaries use, since enemy aircrafts don't emit transponder signals. It's on their radar, most definitely. The military, however, does not have to intercede in a civilian matter unless ordered to.
I am very suspicious. The Iranians are hiding something. My opinion.
